The top brass of NATO-led ISAF in Afghanistan has pledged to work closely with Pakistan in checking and combating TTP militants enjoying sanctuaries in some parts of the war-ravaged country.
This commitment came on Wednesday that coincides with the visit of Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani to Spain where he would participate in three days NATO Military Committee Conference scheduled to begin in Sevilla from 16th September.
General Kayani who left Wednesday for Spain would exchange views with other senior NATO officials on the regional security. The conference will focus on future operational and transformational challenges. The attention will be given to the evolution of NATO’s operation (ISAF) in Afghanistan and to regional security. ISAF Commander Gen Allen and NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Gass, would also participate in the conference.
According to the informed sources, ISAF has assured Pakistan of a deeper cooperation with regard to TTP’s safe havens in Afghanistan and its efforts to mounting cross-border incursions into Pakistan in a bid to destabilise the neighbouring Islamic republic, which has been victim of terrorism and extremism.
Some militant groups, believed to be associated with defunct TTP, have been mounting cross-border attacks into Pakistan border districts of Dir and Chitral.
The sources said these had been enjoying sanctuaries in Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan. Pakistan Army has also moved some of its troops to Dir and Chitral districts to tackle the emerging challenge.
