recently when the economy is bad shaped, they also tend to censor inflation news and to fake the numbers. I don't even believe those numbers released by Indian government.

What bad news are we going to report about our economy you genius ? Our economy hasn't been in bad shape since 1991 when we started liberalizing. Even during the worst phase of the recession , we were growing at about 7% , which is probably more than fastest rate pakistan has grown in its entire history. And who cares if you or your government believes it or not , the rest of the world does and the fdi continues to flow.

Excellent read and really rather fair, I thought - Why won't the bad news part stick? Because it's really not about bad news, at it's core the bad news won't stick because it does not apply - Maoists and Naxalites about? Sure but they are not doing bombings in cities -- And no political party at the center is promoting their ideas nor allowing for their infiltration in the armed forces -- in other words, the bad news is not that there are movements that are anti-civilization itself that have gained such ground that incredible numbers of persons have a religious conviction in anti-civilization ideas - sure Maoists and Naxalites have rural support and among leftist academics, for whom these are local matters of Justice, but not the threat to the state or the very fabric of civilization itself.

Shining India is a winning PR campaign, not just because one can point to successful enterprise but because by and large the world wants to see that success - after all the message from India is not one of anti-civilization, it's not one of civilizational war, it's not one of a fundamental clash of values .

Well said. I had pointed out something similar in a post many moons ago in the midst of a discussion with Tech Lahore. 20 years ago India was all about snake charmers & the elephants with some miserable social issues thrown in & ordinary Indians were complaining that those were the only stories ever published. There were incredulous stories when the IT industry first started to make a mark with astonished writers trying to grasp the sudden change from mouses in temples to mouses in the hands of software professionals. Condescending stories continued for many more years from all sorts of sources, I remember a discussion in a Turkish newspaper about IT where the participants said something to the effect of "if Indians can do it, what stops us & one comment that Turkey must concentrate on high end IT while leaving the low end to the Indians (who were obviously incapable of doing any of that stuff). There was nothing particularly unusual about this type of stereotyping and the participants were not being particularly cruel, it was just that the reality of India was changing faster than the image that people had. Today, if you want to find it - the rats can still be found in a temple, there are still some snake charmers to be found & elephants are still around. They however, are not the compelling story anymore. There are other stories that better fit in with the image of India (a substantially more complex one)that exists today. I also made the point that the "feel good" stories from Pakistan find it difficult to hit the target since it so contrasts both the image & the reality. Pakistanis ask the same questions about media coverage being negative that Indians of 20 years ago asked. The eyes see only what the mind focuses on. That is how it is!

In the case of Pakistan, I really don't have any complaints of the international media -- Pakistan must first decide who and what they are, they seem to want it both ways, they want to be able to say, the heck with the world and also want the world to say, "Isn't that grand" -- it will never work that way.

This focus on the anti-civilization message that screams out from every possible venue in Pakistan, is justified, in my opinion - after all, what the heck kind of message is that? If Pakistanis want positive also reflected then they have to make the positive, right? I mean if you are going to go around saying Islamism is positive, you really have to convince them how sectarianism, misogyny, inequality before the law, tribalism, rejection of science and illiteracy, a focus on ideology over the material, are qualities that the rest of the world might also find helpful in the destruction of society and state, that these are good and right things to want - a tough sell in the rest of the world.
