Dhaka, June 19 (bdnews24.com) – The Chittagong city poll results indicate a turnaround among the people.
BNP's senior joint secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the people have turned against the government.
He made the statement in a reaction to the polls that saw an impressive victory of the opposition BNP's mayoral candidate against the government backed three-time mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
BNP-backed M Manzur Alam beat Mohiuddin by 95,528 votes in the June 17 polls.
Fakhrul said: "People have begun to turn around against a fascist government."
He said the verdict from Chittagong was a turning point.
"It is high-time to fight against the government."
The BNP leader lambasted what he referred to as the government's "policy of suppression".
"They want to silence dissent with torture. All of us should launch a movement against them."
He referred to the closure of Channel 1 and daily Amar Desh, both closely linked to the opposition BNP, and not allowing transmission of Jamuna TV.
"They do not believe in press freedom."
Fakhrul alleged that journalists across the country were being tortured.
"They want to stop the freedom of expression by suppression."
He condemned the government for alleged torture on Mahmudur Rahman acting Amar Desh editor during police remand.
