Bangladesh Awami Leauge suffers defeat

CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh) - BANGLADESH'S ruling Awami League party suffered an unexpected blow on Friday when an opposition candidate won a crucial mayoral election in the port city of Chittagong.
Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate M. Manzur Alam beat the incumbent ruling party candidate - who has been mayor for 17 years - by 95,528 votes, Chittagong election commission official Shafiqur Rahman said.

'People responded to our promise of change in Chittagong,' Mr Alam told reporters after the initial results were announced.

The BNP, which is currently boycotting parliament and has called a protest strike on June 27 to try to bring down the government, said their Chittagong victory signaled widespread discontent with the AL's 'misrule'.

The result marks the first loss of a key position for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League 18 months after it won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections that ended two years of military rule.

'This defeat is a signal for the government, we accept the result, we realise that the people have spoken and we will help the new mayor as best we can,' said Obaidul Kader, a senior AL leader. -- AFP

The BNP should let the current govt rule until the next elections and not try to "bring down the government".

Dhaka, June 18 (bdnews24.com)– Opposition leader Khaleda Zia has thanked the people of Chittagong for electing M Manzur Alam the mayor of the port city, her press secretary said on Friday.

Maruf Kamal Khan, quoting the former prime minister, said, "People's mandate against the oppression and torture of the government is reflected in the result."

She hoped that Manzur would work with everyone for the development of Chittagong.

The BNP-backed mayor hopeful won comfortably beat his former mentor A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, the pro-government long-time mayor, by 95,528 votes.

The returning officer for the Chittagong City Corporation elections Jesmin Tuli announced the results at 10:30am as hundreds of officials and polling agents worked through the night after Thursday's voting.

Khaleda also expressed her gratitude to the law-enforcing agencies for helping conduct a peaceful election.

She thanked the Election Commission and others concerned.

The media played a vital role in the polls, she added.

Maruf said Khaleda in her statement also thanked leaders and supporters of her party, the Chittagong Development Movement, professional organisations and the allies of four-party alliance.

I wonder, what is my brother Iajdani will say after this land slide defeat?? :coffee:

Which anti state-Islalmic activities have they done?

They are trying to Amend our current semi-Islamic constitution to secular as well as trying to enforce secular education including Madrasa. Bangladesh must stay Islamic.

Only one say.. Wish BNP best of luck in running CCC. Also hope BNP will withdraw the Hartal on 27th of June.

Also thanks AL for arranging such a peacefull and neutral election for the first time under a democratic government. Good progress in our democratic system.

BNP can use some luck.

So Obviously myth of so called anti liberation forces has been rejected by new generation Bangaldeshis proved totally wrong. Most voters of CCC were new generations voters and they care less than nothing about old dead issue that awami always try to bank on. Most of us would like to move forward because why losing energy on past.

I do not support haratal because at the end of day it will harm Bangladesh as a whole however if awami continue with this one eye rule then what other choice we have beside taking it on the street.

BNP on it's feet again so expect barricade if awami try to walk over us.:smokin:

"neutral election" ??????? Far from it. Awami League tried until last minute to change election result. That’s why Awami controlled election commission delayed declaring result for hours making time for Awami regime to manipulate the result. As part of the plan Awami regime prevented Presiding officer from signing poll results. When BNP came out with protest and vigilance, there was little Awami regime could do at that point.

Awami regime already proved its fascist character and just a failure to manipulate an election result does not make Awami League regime a democratic entity.

Current Election comission (EC) is Awami B team and no national election can be held under this regime and/or under this EC.

But I was under the impression that your country had a minority of other communities too. So with the system you prescribe, don't you think they would be left isolated?

It's just a question out of curiosity,as I am not too familiar with your country.

A famous Urdu saying goes like this:
Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahin mante :sniper:

Awami tried to alter the result some how but failed due to BNP's decisive action. I am proud of them.
