Should countries wait for results before they jump on this 5th Gen band wagon. In JSF's case looks like theyve tried to satisfy all the parties (Airforce, navy, marines) and ended up with a plane that doesnt excel at anything.

.
If its anything like the F104 star fighter of its time, then all is lost.

. .
By comparison the F-22 looks like a awesome fighter but theyve canned that completely.

the thing i didnt not agree with is to have one plane to do 3 jobs. this should have made a like for like replacement. example f16 and a10 to be replaced by a unique plane, and the harriers to be replaced by another unique aircaft and same applies to the f18. thats a flaw. i watched the video a while ago. and his arguement is for within visual range engagements. and raw physical performance.but tommorows fight will be beyond visualrange, which is why its a stealth aircraft.

to be honest the of 3 varients the f35a/c are the only good jets . the f35b is a waste of space. i wish we got those instead of the f35b.

compelling you towards what exactly ?
ill break it down for you, F22 would have been a much better choice as far as air superiority is concerned.
As far as close air support is concerned the A-10 seems to do a good job anyway.

F22 is a heavy air-superiority. F35s are multi role ! Where is the confusion !

And for those blog articles which keeps popping from time to time, well they can't be explained the network capability and situational awareness levels of a F35s since it is classified (among other things)

Anyone doubting its capability, we would be happy to have a tete-a-tete in the battle field with them :D

you dont think 4t/5thh gen fighters like what the Ruskies or Chinese are making talk to each other or situationally aware (what if everyone brings an AWACS to the party). At some stage when the odds are equal and it comes down to good old fashioned dog fighting hows a JSF going to fare against the Russian 5th gen.

Glad you added something constructive.

The F4 Phantom success was probably the reason. Originally a naval aircraft carrier plane it went on to used by the air forces of over a dozen countries with over 5000 built.

Actually...THAT is the norm and have been for decades. Think about it...

The F-15 and F-16 platforms does how many jobs ? Sure, we may have the F-15A/C models does strictly air-air, but the F-15 platform itself have been modified to do both air-air and air-ground missions. Same for the F-16, F-4, and even the F-14 was experimented with to deliver bombs. The reality is that only the bombers have remain true to their original mission, whereas the fighter platform, no matter country of origin, have been tasked to go from air superiority to strike to reconnaissance. Countries that have no choice but to import their defense needs multi-missions capable aircrafts.

Glad you added something constructive.
I have added much more constructive comments to this issue than you ever will...

So in principle what you are agreeing here is, F35 though good in BVR, will be bad in a knife-fight (a tone down from the F35 is a lemon rhetoric) ?

Pretty much, the old timers in the video are calling it a lemon btw.
