By your logic, Su-35 would be a Su-27 variant.
So when new engines and avionics are fitted, it's not the same aircraft? And again you asked to find any Mig-29 varient. Your logic is: when an aircraft gets new upgrades it can't be compaired, which is simply not true. Example, F-18 compaired to F-18SH both are the same aircraft but one is a newer varient, thus it is superior.
Even better, F-22 would be a F-15 variant.
you're taking it to the extreem.
Mig-35 and Mig-29 are in the same family, but it is not a variant.
Yes it is. It's a further development of the Mig-29.
The Mikoyan MiG-35 (Russian: Микоян МиГ-35, NATO reporting name: Fulcrum-F) is a further development of the MiG-29M/M2 and MiG-29K/KUB

Key words Mig-29M/M2 and Mig-29K
They are not even in the same class with almost 9000kg difference in take off weight.
New engines, and composites will do that. If the Mig-35 had some Mig-29 engines from 1983 would it make you feel better? They still weigh the same but more powerful engines enables the Mig-35 to carry more payload.
