Tamil Nadu: In this village, Gandhi is God

Senthapalayam: He is the Father of the Nation but most people remember the Mahatma only on Gandhi Jayanthi. In Erode district of Tamil Nadu, villagers do much more than that - they actually worship him, year round.

For twelve years people of Senthapalayam village have been worshipping him and offering daily poojas.

"There may be different Gods for Andhra and Tamil Nadu but Gandhi is one great person the entire world praises and follows. So we have built this temple for him," said Vayapuri Mudaliyar.

Gandhiji's birthday is also an occasion for the traditional milk ritual, paalabishekam, and to feed the poor.

"We feel so proud to worship the father of our nation. Even our children worship him now," said Dr Leela, Gandhian devotee.

While Gandhian values seem to be slowly fading away, in this village people appear to have faith in the relevance of Mahatma's values, even today.
