Is Chinese threat to India real?

India can't match China's military force: Navy Chief

New Delhi: Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta has set off a storm by saying India cannot match China military force. Is it a warning from India's military that the government needs to hear?

"In military terms, both conventional and non-conventional, we neither have the capability nor the intention to match China force for force," said Admiral Sureesh Mehta.

For a nuclear-armed military representing the interests of a billion-plus people, the lack of confidence is quite striking. India's military leadership has made a stunning confession that New Delhi doesn't have the stomach for a fight, if push came to shove on the disputed Sino-Indian boundary.

"Whether in terms of GDP, defence spend or any other parameter, the gap between the two is too wide to bridge and is getting wider by the day," he said.

Is Mehta expressing frustration at the slow pace of India's military modernisation? While India spends about billion annually on defence, China spends at least thrice as much, although some estimates go up to $ 200 billion.

Its military is twice as large as India and its nuclear arsenal far well proven.

"The eco penalties resulting from military conflict would have grave consequences for both nations. It would therefore be in both our interests to cooperate with reach other," he said.

The question is, does China want nothing but cooperation with India, as Mehta would want? It continues to proliferate missile and nuclear technology to Pakistan. Its growing footprint in the Indian Ocean challenges India's pre-eminence.

Its presence in ports ranging from Sittwe in Myanmar to Hambantotta in Lanka and Gwadar in Pakistan suggests a plan for the strategic encirclement of India. The Navy Chief's dramatic statement may have been a desperate cry to counter the Dragon.

U know on another thread i suspected it and mentioned too that ur not an American , this post confirms my doubt. Shame on u to hide behind another flag :rofl:

china was a threat,is a threat and will remain a threat, that is obvious

but how the article overestimate chinese capability,so chinese have a much bigger fleet then india, but how many ships can they divert into the IOR,half their fleet or their complete fleet at a time when some powerful navies r standing next door to them

the string of pearls, each and everyone in india's striking range,so dont overestimate it,and by the way the countries in which pearls r situated,Myanmar-a nation with which india to have good relations, srilanka, well it was in news all this time for the grat indo-china match going on,bangladesh-most of the bangladeshi's here consider their govt to b a stooge of india,so which territort will b china using against as

and dont forget our own listing ports from mauritios to madagascar and the far eastern naval command just at the mouth of mallaca strait

looks like the author is nothing but a fanboy who tries hard to portray that he is being neutral in his analysis..

first he tries to downplay India's capability in all the fields and hype the Chinese to the chore.. and yet some how draws a conclusion that china is not a threat to India..

India's position vis a vis chinese always has been and will be DEFENSIVE in the foreseeable future..

and regarding the military strengths' comparison.. China indeed has numbers to it's kitty but ..the fact of the matter is quality wise India has the upperhand atleast in the Navy and Airforce..and these are bound to improve to India's advantage in the coming years..

china has long been neglected it's navy and only recently has woke up to it's vulnerability in the IOR of it's shipping fleet ...a good example is the chinese ace submarines are so noisy that if they try to venture into the Indian ocean..then they can be picked up by the India's foxbats...

and this balance tilts more to the india's favor when the aircraft carriers come into picture.. and yes china would be adding one into it's fleet some time soon.. but it would take few more years for the chinese navy to adapt to it and formulate it's war doctrine accordingly.. where as india has been maintaining carriers since many years..

all chinese so called string of pearls are just listening posts as of now and will remain so for the near future and when it decides to place it's combat fleet in these ports by then India would have added the required numbers into it's fleet both navy and airforce.. and even i dont think china would be so foolish it place it's combat fleet in these ports as they would be sitting ducks for the India's offensive in times of a conflict...and dont discount the fact that even india is trying to engage and negotiate the friendsly countries in the chinese backyard with regular navy exercises with them..

the only military wing where china has the clear advantage is the army and artillery..which india is trying hard to catch up now a days..and even in that ...india has huge geographic advantage..

as said before.. India's position to the china's threat will be defensive..

some fan boys need to be little bit more mature!!!

There can't be any full flange war between India and china or India and Pakistan...

Although India is much powerful then Pakistan, in NUCLEAR war India loose more due to it's more high value targets, SAME THING APPLY TO CHINA ALSO!!!!!

Remember Cold War????

Vary simple..... now please take deep breath and do some valuable work instead writing silly comments.....

The issue of quality over quantity helps but does not solve the problem of war, it merely prolongs it. The quality of our weapons are good but not good enough to wage and win a war. We need to stop fooling ourselves and build up our missile capability tremendously. Why doesn't intelligence agencies take this seriously. We have only one or two places dedicated to manufacturing missiles. We should increase tenfold in different parts of the country so that in the event of war, any area that does get destroyed, it won't affect the production of such missiles because each and every area would have the independence to build such missiles without any hick up in the chain of supply. Where is India's strategic thinking? All I see is bloody lack of?

Bro dont worry, its all fine...
India is getting there very soon....even faster than china....we are currently in a phase of transition, we will pass this stage and be there in another 20 years.

Pakistan just loves to pitch India against China. An Indo-China war is dream come true for Pakistan.

But no such war will ever happen, India and China have much bigger ambitions in terms of economy and development. The stupid border rows do not require a full fledged war.

You ppl keep dreaming of an Indo-China war.

both countries have way too much to lose than to gain with a war..so it is out of question..and regarding the threat it may be a media hype or a military propaganda to keep the funds coming from GOI and MOD and wake up the babus so dat we can upgrade the depleting hardware and replace the oldies with newer and advanced stuff

China threat is real because in china govt is every thing not the people.they make swift decisions and who knows who will be on power in the coming decades.

I read somewhere, Mao had expected 30 years of peace betwee'sn India and China after he delivered painful blow, for nehru's illadvised "forwad policy" thingy.

If you observe the "border talks" and visiting et el started in mid 90's, so expect .....as build up for the showdown.

The stakes now are far more greater than what they were in 1962. Vis-a-vis China, India's military is not too big but it isn't small either. India is a nuclear power with weapons that can cause terrific destruction in Chinese mainland. But India certainly isn't going to be an aggressor here and China too knows very well that the financial losses incurred during the war will be far more greater than the territorial gains made during the war (assuming Chinese military gets the better of India).

If there is a major unrest among Chinese public due to financial reasons or something else then the Chinese may try to do something against India to divert attention but otherwise, the writing is on the wall.

no matter what they say or whine about, one thing is damn sure that indians are preparing themselves just for china, you don't need 7000km + missiles for pakistan.. All this tons of heavy weapons purchases from all over the world are just for china. And I don't think, chinese are sitting quite out there..

PS: God forbids war in Asia.
