The IDF assesses that that the projectile was stray fire resulting from adjacent battles between Assad regime forces and rebels on the Syrian Golan.

An Iron Dome battery stationed in the Golan Heights intercepted a projectile fired from Syria that was heading for the area on Saturday afternoon, marking the first time that Iron Dome intercepted a threat over the Golan since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war.

The IDF assesses that that the projectile was stray fire resulting from adjacent battles between Assad regime forces and rebels on the Syrian Golan.

The Golan Heights, situated along the Syrian-Israel border, has recently become hotbed of activity seeing at least eight mortars land in the restive area over the last week.

On Tuesday, tensions escalated even further after the Syrian Army claimed it had shot down an Israeli fighter jet while conducting an operation over its airspace.

Syrian news agency SANA reported that President Bashar Assad's forces shot down the Israeli aircraft in Syria after the IAF struck in the southern Quneitra countryside in response to a mortar exploding in the Golan Heights. The projectile's landing in the Golan appeared to be spillover fire from fighting in Syria.

In a rare response to a foreign report, the IDF on Tuesday denied that any of its aircraft had been downed, but said Syrian forces had fired two surface-to-air missiles after the Israeli strike Monday night on a Syrian position. However, the military said the missiles were nowhere near the vicinity of the Israel aircraft. The IDF added that all the Israeli jets had returned to base.

On Monday evening, Syrian fire crossed into the northern Golan Heights as a nationwide ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia came into effect in the embattled country.

In response, the Israeli air force attacked cannons belonging to the Syrian regime on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

Military officials attribute any hostile activity in the area as a result of spillover from the greater Syrian civil war being waged by a number of Islamist rebel groups and the Bashar Assad led Syrian government.

The IDF considers the Syrian regime responsible for every action on its territory and will not suffer any attempt to hurt the sovereignty of the State of Israel and its residents safety, the army stated.

Syria's chemical weapons program
Syria's chemical weapons program began in the 1970s with weapons and training from Egypt and the Soviet Union, with production of chemical weapons in Syria beginning in the mid-1980s. In September 2013 Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention (formally acceding on 14 October), and agreed to the destruction of its weapons, to be supervised by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as required by the Convention. Prior to September 2013 Syria had not publicly admitted to possessing chemical weapons, although Western intelligence services believed it to hold a massive stockpile. In September 2013, French intelligence put the Syrian stockpile at 1,000 tonnes, including Yperite, VX and "several hundred tonnes of sarin" In October 2013, the OPCW found a total of 1,300 tons of chemical weapons On 16 October 2013, the OPCW and the United Nations formally established a joint mission to oversee the elimination of the Syrian chemical weapons program by mid-2014.
