IRGC Forms Drone Unit for Cloud Seeding

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force has created a drone unit to carry out cloud seeding projects in different parts of Iran, an official said.



Shahab Jamshidi, representative of the IRGC Aerospace Force at a meeting on cloud seeding, held in Tehran on Friday, said the military force has created the specialized drone unit to carry out cloud seeding projects in five regions across the country.

He described the pilotless aircraft as a perfect option in cloud seeding practices considering their high maneuverability and low costs of flight.

In January 2018, IRGC Aerospace Force Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh voiced readiness to help the Energy Ministry carry out cloud seeding operations, saying his forces were at the Iranian nation’s service and would mobilize all equipment to help the administration.

It came after frequent droughts and low rainfall in Iran in last autumn forced the administration to opt for cloud seeding in the hope of squeezing more precipitation out of the atmosphere.

Cloud seeding originated in the US in the 1940s. The method generally used in the winter involves ground-based generators set at high elevations that are literally fired up to release plumes containing silver iodide crystals into storm clouds. When water vapor or droplets attach to the silver iodide crystal, latent heat is also released, and it increases cloud size and the duration of storms.

Global warming has forced many arid and semi-arid areas around the world, including Iran, to suffer from drought.

No n because they announced it just 2-3 day ago and if they even made that unit operational it take time to make the coordination with other branch of government . and making that cooordination is vital and take time otherwise you see the rain fall in places that are not in need of rain.
IRGC is a military unit the decision on when and where the clouds get seeded must come with coordination with agriculture ministry also Department of Environment. And probably interior ministry. If they don't coordinate with each other we can damage ecosystem more than what we gain in agriculture (perhaps even there be no gain in agriculture)

Well you can also say, just because they've announced the unit now, doesn't mean they haven't been experimenting or engaging in cloud seeding activities before. It's completely possible after a number of successful operations, they've decided to create a dedicated cloud seeding unit.

Guys don't be upset something is starting late, be happy that it IS happening! At least we are seeing steps taken to deal with this drought. Iran's biggest threat is definitely this drought.

in fact, they gave this news a lot before the winter arrived. i had heard in the news

The cloud seeding operation is not free and I believe that is for spring not winter.
Thanks god we are experiencing rainy autumn and winter in all of the country. I have hope that is end of the long Drought in past years (at least 10 years). I clearly remember from my childhood rivers with many waters in south and south east of Iran which because of Drought, they become dry.
I read in one book after Lebanon, Iran has highest percentage of rain per area in west Asia !!!!

however I believe if we act smartly and control our waters we won't face big problems. Also we must improve our agriculture and water managing.
At end Technology will come to help humans to control water shortage.

That's the most important thing we must do.
We really waste our limited water resources by not modernising our agriculture.
