The Iraqi Air Force’s first F-16 fighter took to the skies over Fort Worth, Texas, this week. The Block-52 model aircraft is the first of 36 ordered by the Iraqis.

The first of 36 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 52 Fighting Falcon multirole combat aircraft for the Iraqi Air Force (IqAF) has made its maiden flight, the company announced on 7 May.

The twin-seat F-16D conducted the flight out of the Fort Worth production facility in Texas, although Lockheed Martin disclosed no further details.

Iraq is set to shortly begin receiving its first batch of 18 aircraft, which will bridge the top-end capability gap that the IQAF has had since it was reconstituted in 2003 following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

According to US Defense Security and Co-operation Agency (DSCA) notifications, these aircraft will be equipped with Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing Systems; conformal fuel tanks; Pratt & Whitney F100PW-229 or General Electric F110-GE-129 increased-performance engines; AN/APG-68(V)9 radar sets; AN/AAQ-33 Sniper or AN/AAQ-28 Litening targeting pods; F-9120 Advanced Airborne Reconnaissance Systems (AARS) or DB-110 reconnaissance pods; AN/ALQ-211 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suites or Advanced Countermeasures Electronic Systems (ACES); and AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispensing systems.

Weapon systems listed by the DSCA comprised M61 20 mm Vulcan cannons (plus 40,000 rounds of ammunition); AIM-9L/M-8/9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles; AIM-7M-F1/H Sparrow medium-range missiles; AGM-65D/G/H/K Maverick air-to-surface missiles; 500 lb (226.8 kg) GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs; 2,000 lb GBU-10 Paveway II laser-guided bombs; 2,000 lb GBU-24 Paveway III laser-guided bombs; Mk 84 2000 lb and Mk 82 500 lb general-purpose bombs.

I like it man! Iraq will have a similar approach as Egypt. A variety of block F16's and Russian multirole fighter craft.

Though it lacks AIM 120 AMRAAM, no AIM 9 X to work with the JHCMS helmet and no JDAM kits to turn the unguided bombs into laser guided. Egypt's F16 have JDAM, anti radiation and anti ship missiles.

But at least the Russian fighter which will be either MIG 35 or SU 30 or SU 35 will have the advanced weaponry

What would you make of the outcome if Iraq's F16 block 52 with AIM-7 Sparrow engages in an air-air engagement with an F16 block 20/30 (MLU) with AIM 120-C7 AMRAAM.

AMRAAM wins.

We had Sparrows in 1999 alert with India while their Mirages carried Medium Range BVRs. PAF was left at a huge disadvantage due to this as F-16s had to get close to shoot the sparrows. To compensate for this deficiency the PAF has over 1000+ BVRs in inventory now. AIM-120C5/7 AMRAAMs, SD-10A and some other BVR missiles.

That explains this article Iraq's F-16s Have A Cool Paint Job But Antiquated Weapons

The US refused the sale of AH 64-E until Iraq bought the MI 28Ne, after a deal for MIG 35's or Flankers the US won't have a reason to block AMRAAM anymore.

The SU-35 is a badass!

Let's hope someone will get their hands on it soon.
