Iran Dy Foreign Minister arrives in India
By ANI | New Delhi [India] | Last Updated at July 17 2018 07:25 IST

Iranian deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi arrived here on Sunday late night to hold Foreign Office consultation with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Araghchi's visit comes days after Iran's assured India that it will keep giving flexibility to it in oil supply.

His visit also comes after a senior Iranian diplomat Massoud Rezvanian Rahaghi warned India with retaliatory measures if India reduced oil purchase.

Rahaghi had said that if India plans to replace Iran with countries like Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the US and others for the 10 per cent of its oil demand then it may lose all privileges Iran has offered to India.

However, a day later, Iran embassy issued a clarification with regard to Rahaghi's statement saying, "Deputy ambassador Rahagi was misquoted and Iran has always been a reliable energy partner for India and others, seeking a balanced oil market and rational prices of oil which ensures the interests of both countries as consumer and supplier. Iran understands the difficulties of India in dealing with the unstable energy market and it has done and will do its best to ensure security of oil supply to India through offering various flexibility measures which facilitates our bilateral trade in particular Indian export to Iran."

"India is a sovereign nation and taking into account many criteria including its friendly relations with supplier countries, market factors, geopolitical and geo-economical considerations and potentials and reliability of the oil suppliers chooses its energy partners," it added.

India-Iran relations span millennia marked by meaningful interactions. The two countries established diplomatic links on March 15, 1950. They have in place bilateral consultative mechanisms at various levels which meet regularly.

India-Iran enjoy economic and commercial ties covering many sectors though it has traditionally been dominated by Indian import of Iranian crude oil. India continued to engage with Iran at the time of sanctions.

Major Indian exports to Iran include rice, tea, iron and steel, organic chemicals, metals, electrical machinery, drugs/pharmaceuticals, etc. Major Indian imports from Iran include petroleum and its products, inorganic/organic chemicals, fertilizers, plastic and articles, edible fruit and nuts, glass and glassware, natural or cultured pearls, precious or semiprecious stones, etc.

India, Iran review bilateral ties, to strengthen connectivity through Chabahar port

India and Iran agreed to maintain the momentum of mutually beneficial multifaceted bilateral cooperation and exchanges between the two sides

New Delhi: India and Iran on Monday reviewed their bilateral ties and plans to strengthen connectivity through Indian investment in Iran’s Chabahar port besides import of Iranian crude oil in the wake of the US imposing sanctions on Tehran.

Both sides agreed to “maintain the momentum of mutually beneficial multifaceted bilateral cooperation and exchanges between the two sides”, according to an Indian statement released at the end of the talks in New Delhi.

The stock taking exercise took place during the 15th Foreign Office Consultations between India and Iran. The Indian side was led by foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale and the Iranian delegation was led by visiting deputy foreign minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.

The talks come as New Delhi is looking at ways to balance its ties with Iran that it considers a key partner in energy and connectivity with those with the US, who New Delhi views as a vital source of cutting edge technology and investments.

In May, US President Donald Trump announced that the US was pulling out of an international agreement reached with Iran in 2015—Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—under which the international community would lift a series of sanctions imposed on Tehran in return for the Shia majority nation stopping the enrichment of uranium and allowing international inspectors to monitor its nuclear facilities.

Trump also announced the reimposition of sanctions on Tehran with the punitive measures impacting investments in infrastructure as well as energy.

India is one of the major importers of Iranian fuel and is facing pressure from the US to cut its imports.

“Both sides reviewed and positively assessed the progress in implementation of decisions taken during the state visit of the President of Iran (Hassan Rouhani) to India in February 2018, especially for enhancing connectivity and strengthening cooperation in trade and economic issues and in the promotion of people-to-people exchanges,” according to an Indian statement.

“Views were also exchanged on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including the efforts being made by various parties to address issues that have arisen over the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” it said.

People often forget that country's benefit are paramount in India and specially for current government... when last time sanctions were imposed on Iran, India stood with it till the end and helped them with food and medicines... tried the best to help them in those bad times... and yes it was not done for FREE...

But once the sanctions were revoked, they back-stabbed India... Farzad gas feild deal with ONGC was scrapped, several imports were blocked... kept flirting with China and Pakistan on Chahbahar issue...

So India learnt in a hard way that it is not wise to believe them... we will do everything and anything for the betterment of our nation... period...
