ISTANBUL - Daily News with wires

An Iranian cargo plane passing through Turkish airspace en route to Syria was ordered to land at an airport in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır Tuesday night, Anatolia news agency reported.

The plane, reportedly carrying military equipment, was ordered to land after the authorities received a tip that it carried nuclear weapons, Doğan news agency, or DHA, reported.

The plane was ordered to land after it entered Turkish airspace and then was escorted by two F-16 fighter jets to an airport in Diyarbakır province.

The plane was still being searched for nuclear materials Wednesday morning and hazardous materials teams were present at the airport, DHA added.

The same news is in Zaman, but no mention of what the cargo could be.

An Iranian airplane was forced to land at an airport in southeast Turkey late on Tuesday on suspicion that it may have been carrying arms to Syria, officials at Diyarbakir airport said.

A Turkish foreign ministry official in Ankara confirmed that the plane had been asked to make a "technical landing", but declined to say why.

"The plane was coming from Iran and going to Syria. It was a cargo plane," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters.

He said the Turkish authorities had a legal right to search the plane and ask for the passports of people on board.

Witnesses reported seeing a plane, resembling a Russian-made Ilyushin 62, with Arabic or Farsi script and green livery, parked on the tarmac at Diyarbakir airport. The airport is used for both civilian and military aviation.

The aircraft complied with an order to land and arrived at Diyarbakır at 11:30 p.m. (2130 GMT), airport officials said on condition they were not identified.

The plane, which had two pilots, an unknown number of crew members and no passengers, was still waiting to be searched, they said.

Turkey's state-run Anatolian news agency said the plane was traveling from Tehran to Aleppo in northern Syria.

The forced landing occurred on the same day Israeli naval commandos seized a cargo ship in the Mediterranean Sea carrying what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said were Iranian-supplied weapons intended for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said the vessel had set off from the Syrian port of Latakia and stopped in Mersin, Turkey, before heading towards Alexandria in Egypt. Turkey has no involvement in the arms shipment, the Israeli military said.

Says its suspicion of arms. Both articles are not confirming anything.

Official statement hopefully will be released on what is found on the aircraft.

An Iranian cargo plane, forced to land in southeast Turkey on suspicion it was carrying weapons to Syria, departed on Wednesday after a search squad found nothing illegal on the plane, officials said.

A team trained in chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear cargo from the Civil Defense Directorate inspected the plane, which landed in the city of Diyarbakir late on Tuesday en route from Tehran to Aleppo in northern Syria, the state-run Anatolian news agency said.

Airport officials said the plane, which had two pilots, an unknown number of crew members and no passengers, was ordered to land on suspicion it was carrying Iranian weapons to Syria.

Selcuk Unal, spokesman for Turkey's Foreign Ministry, told Reuters: "The plane was allowed to continue on its route after a routine control." He added the search squads had found "nothing illegal" inside the aircraft.

The forced landing occurred on the same day Israeli naval commandos seized a cargo ship in the Mediterranean Sea carrying what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said were Iranian-supplied weapons intended for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces said the vessel that was captured with Iranian weapons had set off from the Syrian port of Latakia and stopped in Mersin, Turkey, before heading towards Alexandria in Egypt. Turkey was not involved in the arms shipment, it said.

On Wednesday, Israeli Defense Miniser Ehud Barak told reporters at Ashdod Port, where the seized cargo ship was taken, that he hoped Turkey carried out a proper inspection.

"We have seen this plane that was stopped in Turkey, and it must be hoped that there, too, they will conduct checks as required, and that the other players that are involved, too -- that everyone in their area do the right things so that this mutual reinforcement of terror and (military) build-up ceases," Barak said.

Before leaving Diyarbakir, the plane, identified as a Russian-made Ilyushin 62 and bearing Arabic script and green livery, was parked on the tarmac at the airport, which is used for both civilian and military aviation.

Looks like Iran is not using Turkey as a route to transport its arms to its proxies.

It's every country right to inspect suspicious aircraft in their airspace. We do it, you do it and they do it! But I don't think if they use cargo planes to move any nuclear materials, because of spy satellites! There are other easier ways!

Question:
Is it routine procedure for Turkey to scramble F-16s against Iranian cargo planes on a flight plan and force them to land because their Israeli friends feels insecure?

Programmer: What makes you think the aircraft was suspicious?? strange statement from an Irani.

Israeli friends ? have you been living under a rock for the past 2 years ?

Also officials have said they have escorted aircraft for inspection multiple times in the past. Being it is our air space we can intercept any aircraft we like for searching. It is also well documented that Iran smuggles weapons to proxies for conflict against Israel. Are you saying we should support terror operations against Israel ?

Yes and we do it proudly. They are an aggressive foreign implant based on a racist and ethnocentric ideology. And we're duty bound to support their victims. And we've been doing it at great cost and danger to ourselves for more than 3 decades. If you like to be their bitches, just don't forget to buy an extra large pot of vasaline.

Iran reminds to be a Muslim country when situation serves itself. They are supporting Armenia against Muslim Azerbaijan. Now they understood that US will attack to Iran after Iraq because of petrol reserves. Iranian leaders are defying Israel and US because they want to gain sympathy of Muslims. They always see yourself apart from Ummah, now they remind their Ummah when their azzes in danger. They did not do anything for Palestinians. Iran only supported Shia Hezbollah for exporting their impure ideolgy to Lebanon.
I heard that there was a Iranian aid ship which was full of Iranian soldiers and going to Gaza. Where is it?
