Iran and Saudia are two different states though both fiercely sectarian. If both states cease to be Sectarianism promotor and just be normal welfare states all the problems in muslim world will settle down. I don't know why these states are not happy with just promoting their brand of Islam inside their borders why does every muslim needs to bow towards their brand?
Iran is Theocratic country with some semblance of democracy while Saudia is an over stretched family business. Iran in this regard will always have an edge over Saudia. The laws in place in Iran are to stop over throwing of a gov which has more moral standing than that of Saudia.
However speaking in general terms I think Iran is playing a part of instigator in power maneuvers in middle east and has gained alot due to International interference. Iran is playing a strong role in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq thanks to US and Russia. Iran has worked closely with US in Afghanistan and Iraq. In coming years it is inevitable that will secretly if not publically mend its ties with Israel as well. Common sense dictates without Iran, the expansion of Israel will be a hard feat to achieve.
