Iran tops the world in 2022 International Biology Olympiad

IBO 2022 was held from July 10 to 18 in Yerevan, Armenia; which was attended by 65 countries, where Iran and Russia jointly ranked first.

The four-member team, who made an honorable effort winning four gold medals, include, Mehdi Afshari, Amir Reza Zeinali, Mohammad Amin Kyani, and Mohammad Mehdi Rahimpour.

The IBO is an annual competition for secondary school students. Their skills in tackling biological problems, and dealing with biological experiments are tested. Interest in biology, inventiveness, creativity, and perseverance are necessary.

In bringing together gifted students, the IBO competition tries to challenge and stimulate these students to expand their talents and promote their careers as scientists.

According to the IBO official website, the first edition of the competition was held in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, in July 1990. Iran joined the competition in 1999, and so far, the country had 8 gold medalists and an annual 32 silver and bronze medalists.

I've noticed that Iran has a tremendous amount of scientific and technical talent, especially in comparison to other countries in the region. China and Iran really should be working together a lot more on many key projects.

I've noticed that Iran has a tremendous amount of scientific and technical talent, especially in comparison to other countries in the region. China and Iran really should be working together a lot more on many key projects.

National pride in both Countries is very high..Being unjustly vilified in the west for political reasons gives each young person motives to be better..Cultural values that emphasis education is also a big factor in these two very ancient societies...and on top of everything how governments fund and direct education will have huge impact.

We need student exchanges more often...

China still feels obliged to play by the rules of the West which I find very confusing because China is now strong enough to act independently. China-Iran relations should be very warm considering that both countries have been targeted by the West for decades and are still being targeted as we speak but China doesn't seem interested in that.

It's sad to see that Iranian companies and universities have stronger ties with European companies and universities than the Chinese because China for the most part abides by the US sanctions on Iran (except for oil and energy).

Remember I told you that the best talents of our country are leaving engineering and mathematics and instead are choosing biology-related majors? As a result, we will soon see better performance from our students in biology and chemistry Olympiads instead of math, physics and astronomy Olympiads.

This could end up badly for our defense industry because obviously, our defense industry relies heavily on engineering and mathematics, but our healthcare system will benefit from this greatly and it may even help our economy export high quality medical and healthcare products.

But again, I believe the situation of engineering in Iran is alarming. We need more talented people in those majors. We need to encourage people to choose mathematics and engineering. There's a huge financial gap between medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals and engineers in Iran that has caused this drift and we need to remedy it immediately.
The balance needs to be restored immediately with proper planning.

Thank God they are not going into LAW...we do not need lawyers to suck the blood from people like they do in the west..
I agree..It is hard to do math and engineering unless if you make it fun and make the benefits rewarding...In my time everyone wanted to be Doctor and/or Engineer..We have many valuable role models for Math and engineering ..needs planning as you said.

Yeah I agree China should throw a middle finger to those unjust sanctions but China’s govt moves very methodically and conservatively when it comes to these political plays. However I do see a massive shift coming in the next few years.
