Well, the sanctions cant hurt Iran because it is a rich nation. Iraq also had oil but they didnt the have the other card and that is the ''gas card''.
It is not about richness at all. Iraq was a richer country. It is not even about the gas. The real reason Iran has been able to cope with sanctions is because of technology. Iraq had to import even Aspirin and car wind shields. They did not have any capacity to build anything at all. The whole Iraqi industry was just a repair or modification industry. Iran on the other hand is manufacturing most of its needs. Its locally produced cars might not be as good as BMW but they still do the job of carrying people around. Similar is the case in all other areas. If Iran is standing and Iraq is gone is because of technological and scientific capability of Iran and not because of oil and gas. Total Iranian oil and gas exports amounts to less than 2 dollars per Iranian per day. Simple calculation using amount Iran exports from International Energy Agency data and international oil prices proves it. If Iran did not have the industry and agriculture to sustain it, Iran would have been gone long ago. The other lesser reason is that Saddam was a rigid mad man. Iran on the other hand has had different leaders all of whom have been intelligent to different degrees all this time. This has caused the nation to be more variable and conductive to growth. Gas card has nothing to do with Iran's survivability.
