TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran dismissed claims raised by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the three Iranian islands of Abu Mussa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb in the Persian Gulf, and stressed that the three islands are an indispensible part of the country.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian stressed on Thursday the "historical and eternal belonging" of the Persian Gulf islands to Iran.

As regards President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent visit to Abu Musa, the diplomat said, "President Ahmadinejad's visit to this island is an internal affair which has been made in the framework of his provincial tours."

The comments come after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) summoned its ambassador to Tehran, Saif Mohammed Abid al-Zaabi, earlier on Thursday in protest against Ahmadinejad's official trip to the Iranian island of Abu Musa.

On Wednesday, Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahayan criticized the visit as a "violation of UAE sovereignty over its territories."

Amir Abdollahian further invited the UAE officials for dialog to resolve any misunderstandings between the two nations.

"The Islamic Republic is seriously determined to develop and strengthen the ties between the two countries," he added.

International documents clearly show that the three islands, which were historically owned by Iran, temporarily fell to British control in 1903. The islands were returned to Iran based on an agreement in 1971 before the UAE was born.

Iran has repeatedly declared that its ownership of the three islands is unquestionable.

Under international law, no state can defy any agreements, which came into being before its establishment.

Although the UAE continues to make territorial claims against the Islamic Republic despite historical evidence and international regulations, Tehran has remained open to negotiations over the issue.
