Iran releases 9 Indian sailors from jail
New Delhi, Oct 13, 2015,(IANS)

India on Tuesday thanked Iran for releasing nine Indian sailors who had been languishing in a Tehran jail for two years.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted her thanks: "Iran has released nine Indian sailors - Thank you Iran. Thank you HE @JZarif for a prompt action on our request."

"We have secured the release of Sushil Kapoor and 8 Indians from jail in Iran. They will reach Delhi tomorrow (on Wednesday)," she posted.

Sushma Swaraj had raised the issue with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif when he visited India on August 14.

She had highlighted the plight of the nine Indians, including Delhi resident Sushil Arora, who were in jail for two years on charges of smuggling oil. The Indians were part of a shipping crew.

Sushil, a resident of Pachim Vihar, Delhi, had joined a shipping firm in Dubai in October 2013. All was well till Sushil's ship and its crew members were apprehended by the Iranian Government on charges of smuggling oil.

Despite completing his two year jail term in Iran, Sushil was asked to pay a fine of Rs 90 crore for securing his release. While the owner of the ship had earlier paid the fine to get his confiscated ship released, he refused to deposit the fine for the release of the ship's crew members.

Almost two months after Iranian Foreign Minister Javed Zarif’s assurance, Tehran has released nine Indian sailors. “We have secured the release of Sushil Kapoor and 8 [other] Indians from a jail in Iran. They will reach Delhi tomorrow,” External Affairs Minister Suhma Swaraj tweeted on Tuesday. Sushil had been in prison since October 2013 when his ship was seized for smuggling fuel. Despite serving his two-year jail term, Sushil was asked to pay a Rs 90-crore fine. Sushma took up the case with Zarif during his Delhi visit in August. “Iran has released nine Indian sailors - Thank you Iran. Thank you HE @JZarif for a prompt action on our request,” she tweeted directly to Zarif.
