WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during an interview said President Donald Trump would be prepared to sit down with the Iranians if they reduce their malign behavior in the Middle East and agree to enter a new nuclear deal.

"[The] president wants to meet with folks to solve problems," Pompeo told CNBC News on Monday. "If the Iranians demonstrate a commitment to make fundamental changes in how they treat their own people, reduce their malign behavior, can agree that it's worthwhile to enter into a nuclear agreement that actually prevents proliferation, then the president said he's prepared to sit down and have the conversation with them."

Trump Reportedly Ready to Strike Iran Next Month as War of Words Escalates
Earlier in the day, however, Trump said he would meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at any time without any preconditions. Last week, Trump warned Rouhani that if he ever threatened the United States again, Iran would suffer that consequences that few throughout history have ever suffered.

On July 24 the US president said that he would be ready to make a new deal with Iran, as long as it was different from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), more commonly known as the Iran nuclear agreement.

In early May, Trump withdrew from the JCPOA, which was signed in 2015 in Vienna by Iran, the European Union, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany.

I think Trump desperately needs another positive move in international scene for the upcoming elections. I just don't see what Iran can get out of any meeting with him.

Iran might end up negotiating with him just on the basis he is a bafoon.

He doesn’t care about the nuclear deal or even Iran having nuclear weapons. During the campaign, he even said Hilary Clinton wants war with iran.

All he cares about is unraveling what Obama did. And the Iran deal is Obama’s signature achievement. Thus it had to be ripped up.

So yes, Trump would take a WORSE deal and say it’s better than Obama’s.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Iran right now through indirect channels is seeing what it can extract from this adminstration.

After all, sooner or later Iran will have to somehow renegotiate this deal. For now it can exercise patience and strategic thinking.
Iran is probably deciding wether it’s best to strike a deal with this adminstration or wait for a possibly different administration more friendly adminstration after 2020 election.

Iran probably shouldn’t have negotiated with a Democrat adminstration over the nuclear deal. When you want to strike a deal you do it with the most opposing (hardliner) side that way the chances of a deal being ripped up down the road is lower.

Historically Democrat party administrations have been hasher on Iran than Republican Party.

Bush V Obama

Bush Sr V Bill Clinton

Carter V Reagan

Each time a Democrat president had a tougher policy on Iran though verbally they showed themselves as seeking friendlier relations.

Republican presidents while generally more anti Iran rhetoric, they took less action. Even Reagan seeked to bring post revolutionary Iran back into US sphere of influence and supplied weapons to Iran during the Iran-Iraq war.

You know, I used to think that way about Trump too. That he only wants to name the deal after himself. But looking at North Korea, I'm not that certain anymore. I mean they negotiated, NK is dismantling its nuclear and missiles systems or so it seems but where are the benefits for NK?

Not really,as other commentators have noted its not like the dprk really needed its nuclear test site anymore as it had in effect carried out a successful test program that had delivered a modern compact staged thermonuclear warhead,as for the missile test site, well the north koreans have successfully tested their irbm and 2 icbm designs so you could also argue that it isnt strictly necessary anymore either, plus from what I`ve heard everything that has been dismantled could be easily put back quite quickly. The main issues here is that not only has north korea not touched its nuclear enrichment sites and its missile production sites but that these are still working as normal.
After all the money, time, resources, effort and political cost to the north do you really think they would then turn around right at the point of success and offer to give it all up for nothing more than the utterly worthless personal assurance of a us president, especially one like chump?.The north koreans are many things but one thing they are not are fools....chump is being royally played ie hes the grand piano and kim is the liberace....Tum Tum TaTum TaTaTa Tum Tum TaTum...
