India's asks Saudi Arabia to raise oil supply-min | Reuters

"India has sought an extra 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) from Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil producer, for 2012/13, the Indian junior oil minister said, as a replacement for a cut in supplies from sanctions-hit Iran."

UPDATE 2-Japan cuts in Iran crude imports could be over 20 pct-media | Reuters

"China, India and Japan, the top three buyers of Iranian oil, together buy about 45 percent of Iran's crude exports and all of them are planning cuts of at least 10 percent.

China's total cuts this year will amount to 14 percent, according to a Reuters calculation."

UPDATE 2-India seeks more oil every year from Saudi Arabia | Reuters

"China, India and Japan, the top three buyers of Iranian oil, together buy about 45 percent of Tehran's crude exports and all of them are planning cuts of at least 10 percent.

In addition to Japan, South Korea is seeking to be exempt from U.S. sanctions, which means Seoul would also have to cut back on Iranian purchases."

so is there any one around still claiming India (or China) is defying sanctions and the International community?

- this does not happen in the real world, only happens in some people's imaginary world, as they look really desperate

Hey buddy, KSA is a friend of India, has been for a long time, in fact we buy most of our oil from KSA. So what is the problem with buying some more? Your King offered to increase production to meet our needs, very nice of him to do that, so we take you up on your offer. Iran is also a friend of India. KSA may have issues with Iran, we don't. Why do you want us to take sides?

US/EU sanctions on Iran do not apply on India. We do not subscribe to such unilateral sanctions which do not have the support of the UN and which hurt the population more than the regime in power. However, we can't remain blind to the possibility of a war in the Persian Gulf tomorrow. In case of war, all supplies of crude from Iranian oil fields will stop. It is only prudent to bring our exposure to Iranian oil to manageable levels so that the results are not catastrophic if war breaks out. If you read that as India's support to the US/EU sanction on Iran, then that may not be the correct interpretation. We are just making sure that whatever happens, we don't get hurt.

you misunderstood me, India have all the right to make sure it have the oil need it needs, india have all the right to take care of its economical & political interests, i'm not protesting that, india have all the right to be sure it will not get hurt by sanctions or military option for iran.

ibut what i'm saying is came here few days ago and saw a flood of topics by desperate people, claiming india is defying sanctions against iran and siding with iran against the international community, which of course is completely false and just pure lame propoganda, by people who think writing comments on internet will change the real world, so i brought these reports to show them that neither India or China will try to defy sanctions by the US & world against iran.

i hope i explained correctly

This is not good.. Munni buckled under pressure... This government is getting more and more embarrassing for the entire country. It is a shame that our countrymen are so stupid to actually elect such vermin to such important positions.

What's surprising is that even China has agreed partly to the sanctions and scaled back its purchase. Didn't expect that from them.

There are ways of bypassing it. For instance, having a semi-protectionist attitude even now, we have a number of state-owned financial institutions that can participate to finance oil from Iran. So even if they as individual entities are sanctioned by US or EU or both, the other main institutions can continue trading with the west while the sanctioned ones can deal with Iran instead.

We need oil and if USA can replace Iran in a fair game and address our geo-strategic concerns that Iran usually can, then we can consider their offer.

No one is openly defying sanctions. Even China accepted it despite all the bravado of "standing up against west" propaganda most Chinese members throw around here.

But there are more subtle methods to bypass them. I think the authorities in higher echelons know the nitty gritties behind them. ;)

Wrong, that was just a small dispute over pricing. We have fully resumed oil imports from Iran:

The sanctions on Iranian oil do not apply to us, they are unilateral sanctions carried out by the USA and Europe.

They can't get those sanctions through the UNSC, since we will veto it. India says they will only sanction Iranian oil if the UNSC says so. So instead of boasting, you guys should thank us for not letting Iranian oil sanctions through the Security Council, at which point you would have to follow them, as your own government said.
