Statistics: One-fourth of world nations buy Iran’s dates
The statistics released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) show that as many as 46 countries [one-fourth of the nations across the world] bought more than 28,000 tons of Iran’s fresh and dried dates in the first four months of the Iranian year [March 21 – July 22].Iran earned about $54.5m in foreign revenues from exporting fresh and dried dates in the four-month period, a rise of around $2m in revenues compared with corresponding period last year.

Iran, Russia form first committee on tech cooperation
Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin attended the first Supreme Committee of Iran-Russia Technology Cooperation on Friday and discussed ways of exchanging technologies.Among other things, the two sides also talked about cooperation on nano- and bio-technology, cognitive science, information technology, communications and aerospace. Iran and Russia decided to form the committee during a visit by Iran’s Sorena Sattari to Moscow last year.

Penelope Cruz to appear in Farhadi’s movie
Penelope Cruz, the world-famous Spanish actress, will play a role in a new movie by Oscar-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. The Hollywood actress has a role in Farhadi’s next international project which is to be filmed in Spain. The movie has yet to be given a title, but the performance of Cruz has been finalized.Farhadi explained his pick [Penelope Cruz] in an interview with Sharq daily, saying, “I have always liked her acting, especially in Spanish movies. […] Last year when I talked to her about the plot of my film, I realized that I had picked the right actress. I was reassured about my decision later when I got familiar with her character, motivation and love for her work. […]”.Cruz, in an interview with Spanish media, said, “One year ago, Asghar told me about the plot of his next film and I told him that I would play in it, without reading the scenario. I think he is an extraordinary director. The film’s plot is very strong and I very much like to play that role.”

Three-hour firefight results in confiscation of ton-plus drugs
Police in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan have seized 1.135 tons of drugs in two separate armed engagements with traffickers which lasted three hours.According to provincial police, in one incident, security forces seized more than 700 kg of opium from a pickup truck and arrested an armed trafficker.In another, traffickers on board a pickup fired at police officers after they were ordered to pull over. After the long gun battle the traffickers abandoned the vehicle that contained more than 270 kg of opium and 150 kg of heroin.

2,400 schools to go green in Iran this year
The director of the Sustainable Development and Environmental Economics Department at the Environment Protection Organization has said that as many as 2,400 schools will go green across the country in the new school year [starting September 23].Zahra Javaherian further said that under an agreement signed by the Environment Protection Organization and the Education Ministry, environment teachers will attend classes in these green schools this year to teach water, energy and waste management, as well as green space.In parallel with the educational subjects the students learn at school, they will be given lessons on the environment to later share them with their family members, she said.

Iran has joined the very exclusive club of countries which can repair neural stem cells (NSCs), said the administrator of Khatam-ol-Anbia Hospital.Pirhossein Kolivand further said that NSCs are used for the patients whose spinal cords are disintegrated because of a disease, adding that neurons can be taken from bone marrow and in the next stage from fat tissues.He also said these cells can be used for the newly paralyzed people [those with a severed spinal cord], adding that the disabled people and those suffering from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) can log onto
