You know i though usually war vererans like yourselves would realize that there more to this world than wars, since you usually see people get killed and it changed your view of wars, but i guess i am very wrong. There is no doubt usa had the best navy and air force, only a fool would debate with that, but your people in your country is far from united, which is why your 'invinsible' navy will suffer great casualties with a war with iran since most of its people are united and will defend their country till the death.

If the US started a war with Iran it will be its biggest war since Vietnam and will be as hard if not HARDER to beat. And lets face it the US is in no position to fight right now unless it wants a very pissed off population and hike in their debt.

The US troops in ME bases cannot be surrounded or overrun. In case of a war, the US troops in Afghanistan can easily be taken as prisoners by a much larger force.

From who? You're talking about taking POWs of a country that has the most mobile expeditionary force on this planet. Even if they're not able to send soldiers to Middle East, with the number of soldiers and assets at risk in ME for them, they will resort to using ballistic missile straight. And that won't take time to reach. May not necessarily be nuclear.

First of all, There's going to be no war between Iran and USA. At least in normal sense. The war other than on battlefield is already on. So no point of thinking from that POV. Another reason is that you won't want your territory to be a target of Iranian missiles because significant US bases operate from Saudi, Kuwait, etc.

US won't take the first step; at least not right now. There is no need for war in middle east at the present moment. There's enough trouble already in the adjoining countries from Afghanistan onwards.

They couldn't afford the war quite sometime back; in that case they are still at a leverage considering that their debts to China fund the war even now. A debt that they don't want to pay. Why would they? That's their strategic thinking.

They have no choice at the moment. If they dont pay china the reserve currency will fall. If the reserve currency falls they cant afford to pay their soldiers or afford fuel for their planes etc
