TEHRAN: Iran on Saturday said a US federal court decision to fine Tehran 2.65 billion dollars for the 1983 bombing of a Marine barracks in Beirut was “baseless” and aimed at plundering Iranian assets.

“This decision is baseless. Unfortunately some courts in the United States, without listening to the other side’s views and without investigation, issue verdicts that are not legally defendable,” Iranian government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham told reporters.

“These decision show political pressures to plunder Iran’s assets in the US,” he said, adding that Tehran would follow up the case through its representative at the United Nations.

On Friday, a US federal court ruled that the Islamic republic should pay out the sum to the families of 241 soldiers killed in the 1983 bombing.

The victims’ families hope to get restitution from Iranian funds blocked in US banks since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Tehran that overthrew the US-backed shah’s regime.

A previous court ruling in 2003 held that Iran provided financial and logistical help for the lethal 1983 attack allegedly carried out by Lebanon’s pro-Iranian militant group Hizbullah.

While Iran denies responsibility for the bombing, it played an instrumental role in the founding of Hizbullah in the 1980s.

US troops were deployed in Lebanon in 1982 as part of a UN-sponsored multinational peacekeeping force after the Israeli invasion.

Iran has dismissed the 2003 ruling holding it liable for the bombing.

Washington broke diplomatic ties with Tehran in 1980 after the Islamist students stormed its mission in Teheran taking US diplomats hostage for 444 days.

Another reason to attack Iran for Bush. But hey USA can easily collect the USD 2.65 billion by siezing all the Iranian owned super tankers and their cargoes world wide. But hell that will jack up the prices of crude oil world-wide. Guess who will pay for it ? The whole world including common US citizens, Europeans, Asians and even Irananians (since they have no modern refinaries) interms of higher price for refined products like petrol etc. Will keep my cycle ready.

Best Regards

Iran should round up some individuals whose families may have been killed during the riots sponsored by the CIA when Mossadegh was overthrown and present a case for damages in an Iranian court that can award a few billion in damages to them. It should then round up people whose relatives were tortured, incarcerated and killed by the Shah - whose rule was a direct result of U.S intervention in Iran, and award them a few billion in damages as well.

Ahmedinejad can also get together with some of his Latin American buddies to find descendants of people killed by U.S intervention and support for dictators like Augusto Pinochet, Somoza, Noriega and the military regime in Guatemala, that has perpetrated one of the worst genocides in human history against the indigenous population, and initiate cases against the US on their behalf.

The self-righteous crap and greed oozing out of the US gets to nauseating levels sometimes.

Who also remembers the Iranian Airliner that was shot down by a US ship back in 1985 ?

I didn't see them bombing America.
