Iran Building Oceangoing Research Vessel for Exploration in Antarctica
TEHRAN (FNA)- Managing-Director of the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography (INIO) Vahid Chegini said the country is building an oceangoing research vessel to conduct exploratory missions in the South Pole.
Speaking to FNA on Tuesday, Chegini said that 35% of the construction phase of the 50-meter long oceangoing research vessel has so far been completed.
He added that the Defense Industries Organization of the Iranian ministry of defense has started construction of the vessel since spring 2011.
He stated that body of the vessel is made of steel and will be built by November 2012.
As regards Iran's plan to set up a permanent Antarctic base, Chegini said that Iran initially plans to dispatch its experts to the region through the assistance of countries which have already set up bases in the South Pole in a bid to gather experience and gain permission from international bodies for setting up a base in the Antarctic.
Earlier this month, Iranian lawmakers discussed a bill which requires the government to build oceangoing ships equipped with special engine and fuel technology allowing the vessel to traverse thousands of miles without any need to refueling.
The bill, which went under discussion at a meeting of the Iranian Parliament's Industries Commission on July 1, requires the government to "equip a part of the country's sea vessels, including the naval and research fleets, with special engines which enjoy the capability to traverse long distances with no need to refueling", the Commission rapporteur told reporters at the time.
"Given the country's growth in designing and manufacturing sea vessels, including oceangoing ships, the government is required to take practical measures to prepare a safe ground for (Iranian ships') durable presence in oceans and far coasts," he added.
The bill will soon be introduced to the parliament to receive a final approval of all MPs.
