Even as the government treats Israeli accusations cautiously, Iranian diplomatic sources here hoped New Delhi to probe the bombing of Israeli diplomat’s car thoroughly with fairness and without any pressure.

They were amazed at the speed of accusations, saying when even Indian police were grappling for facts; the Israeli prime minister blamed Tehran within 20 minutes.

Official sources refused to point against “any individual, entity, organization or country’s involvement in bombing so far”. They maintain there has been no contact with Iran on this issue.

Intelligence sources say Israel had sought to probe the Iranian angle with claims that four terrorists were hiding in the Iranian embassy on Barakhamba Road. Iranian ambassador Mehdi Nabizadeh stoutly denied any such person getting shelter in the embassy premises. He said Tehran would neither accept nor deny Israeli allegation that his country was behind the attack. He urged the Indian government to investigate and clarify the real position.

Attempting to remind how they had rescued India in the past when it had been put on the backfoot by the West on the issue of Kashmir in 1994, Iranian diplomatic sources expected India to return generosity not only in probing the bombing fairly, but also to stand up the against the “unjust” West for cornering Teheran.
In March 1994, a special Indian military plane carrying the then ailing external affairs minister Dinesh Singh had landed in Tehran at a time when Indian economy was on the brink and the Organisation of Islamic Countries, supported by influential western nations were moving a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council to condemn India on human rights violations in Kashmir. The resolution after getting an approval from the UNHRC, was supposed to be referred to UN Security Council to initiate economic sanctions and other punitive measures against India.

Since at OIC all decisions had to be arrived at through consensus, the then prime minister Narasimha Rao had shrewdly chosen Iran to force it to abstain from voting. Iran surgically killed the OIC move—starting a new chapter in its diplomatic relations. Iran and Pakistan started distancing in Afghanistan. India cohabited with Iran to promote Northern Alliance, inimical to Pakistani interests. With shock and awe, Pakistan termed it a backstabbing.

The government sources also reiterated that Israeli accusations would not affect their diplomatic engagements with Tehran. An Indian official and business delegation is visiting Tehran next week to work out a mechanism for India to pay for its oil imports from Iran. India is also augmenting capacity of Chabahar Port in Iran and even to construct a railway line from this port to connect to Afghanistan and central Asia.
