Many Indians say that India is behind China only because China started reforms 15 years before India. China hosted the Olympics in 2008, so India should be ready to do the same in 2024, which is 15 years after 2008. Don't you guys agree?

IOC's Bach says India not ready to bid for 2024 Olympics

NEW DELHI - India is not ready to bid for the 2024 Olympics but could be a candidate to host the games in the future, IOC President Thomas Bach said on Monday.

"Frankly, we were a little bit surprised about this speculation (of a potential Indian bid)," Bach said at a news conference after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Because of different reasons we think it will be a little too quick for India to have successful Olympics in 2024."

There had been reports in the Indian media recently about a possible 2024 bid from New Delhi or even Ahmedabad, the biggest city in Modi's home state of Gujarat.

Bach said Modi did seem eager to bid but understood that India, the world's second most populous nation, was not prepared yet.

"We were happy to see that the PM was sharing this feeling — that he is seriously looking at the Olympic candidature." Bach said. "However, he wants to be well prepared and have all the expertise. It was an opinion shared by us."

The prospect of a successful Indian bid for 2024 seemed remote after New Delhi's organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games came under severe criticism at home and abroad over constructions delays and corruption scandals.

Rome, Boston and Hamburg, Germany, are the declared candidates so far for 2024. Paris is also expected to join the race, among other cities.

The deadline for declaration of bids to the International Olympic Committee is Sept. 15. The host city will be selected by the IOC in 2017.

While a 2024 bid has been ruled out, Bach said India could be in the running in the future.

"He (Modi) considers building a successful candidature from now till September will be a little difficult but we will stay in contact for the future," Bach said.

The IOC leader said the immediate focus would be on helping India improve in sport.

"India is a sleeping giant and we will try to wake it up," he said. "With 1.2 billion people and 80 million of them young, it has a lot of potential."

India has only recently started winning medals at the Olympics. It won six medals coming at the 2012 London Olympics but no golds.

Rifle-shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won gold in Beijing in 2008, remains India's only individual gold medal winner. The last of India's eight Olympic gold medals in field hockey came 35 years ago in Moscow.

Bach said the IOC had signed an agreement with the Indian Olympic Association and the Indian government on Monday to help improve Indian sports.

. . . . . .
India's infrastructure wouldn't be ready to host an event like olympics. Except parts of Delhi most cities in India have infrastructure like shit.

.
After India shat all over the 2010 commonwealth games by doing a horrible job of hosting, India should be banned from hosting any big sporting event for 50 years.

India may try its luck for the Games in 2032.

Oh man i just cant find that thread where some Indians went apeshit when some of us mentioned about the CWG debacle and why India wont win the bid because of that.. :sarcastic:

The problem for India is it's always "India will do this", "India will surpass China", India will....

But that doesn't work in the real world.

What they do is look at your infrastructure now, and make a "realistic" estimate of the minimum infrastructure level you are likely to achieve by 2024. Realistic mind you.

And the CWG catastrophe certainly didn't help either.

Lol,Olympic should the least priority for us at this moment. And btw,it was not Mr.Bach who made that decision rather it was our Hon'able P.M. Mr.Modi who decided not to bid for the 2024 Olympics (not due to the lack of infrastructure available in this country to host a mega event like Olympic,) but because he felt that the cost of building the infrastructures related to the Olympic game will be better spend on other developmental projects in this country. Our topmost priority at this moment is to rebuild our economy and improve our infrastructure as a whole, events like Olympic won't bring us any benefit in the long run other than a huge drainage of our monetary resources. So it's better to let super rich countries like China to organize these types of mega event,India is still a poor developing country after all:coffee:

China is a developing country too.

So is Brazil.

So is Russia.

All have hosted an Olympics (Brazil is going to host the 2016 Olympics).

The blame falls on the Congress party and other super-socialists in India who preferred to spend on subsidies and handouts rather than cutting edge infrastructure.

Are you being sarcastic mate!! All the above mentioned countries are middle income economies whereas India is still a low income nation with a "not so good" infrastructure when compared to China , Russia and even Brazil which do have a pretty good infrastructure. Can't say the same about India. But India should really aim for 2032 Olympics and at-least try to create a good infra & economic might ( by promoting itself to a middle income country) needed for hosting Olympics.
