Not OFB,the ARDE!!They are the real ones that actually did the hard works.The OFB just fukced up a decent design into shit due to their non existent quality control.

There was an instance where a rifle failed arde qc in a cold environment. went back to the drawing board and found everything was ok, except for manufacturing process or something. And some jokers here blame the designer for a production fault.

New Delhi: The Indian Army is likely to soon issue a 'Request for Information' for a new single calibre assault rifle to replace its INSAS rifles after it scrapped a four-year-old tender for purchasing 1.8 lakh multi-calibre weapons.

Defence sources also ruled out that the army has shortlisted any particular gun to replace the INSAS, which had entered service in the late 1990s.

"A Request for Information is likely to be issued soon for single calibre guns. This will be open to all," sources said, adding that the project would finally be taken up as part of the 'Make in India' initiative.

Army had initially wanted a rifle with interchangeable barrels firing different calibres -- the 5.56-mm INSAS round and the 7.62-mm AK-47 round.

That was because troops use AK-47s in counter-insurgency operations while the INSAS rifles are issued for peace stations.

However, none of the firms which had pitched for the contract could satisfy the army with sources saying that the General Staff Qualitative Requirements "could well have been too ambitious".

"There was no point on working on something that cannot be worked out," the sources added.

Army had on June 15 informed the four short-listed international firms that it was retracting the multi-crore contract.

Not RIP but substituted by its cousin Excalibur.Both are essentially same thing with different metallurgy and outer furniture.

thats a smart and reasonable move

why waste time and money over multi cal rifels it makes too much to handle its better to go for "one for all and all for one" phylosophy

its better to have a single cal rifle with interchangable barrels which can be changed by the user itself in a conflict zone like in MGs

i hope DODO's in DRDO some day come owt with bull pup version of excalibur with at least 2 more piccatenni rails (one underbarrel and one on 3 or 9 o' clock p[ostions) and a chnagable barrel system

The DODOs did come up with a bullpup version of INSAS 1B,way back in 1994.Wonder what made the MOFOs in the Indian Army to refuse those even for user trials back then.

and putting up options which can also be put up for export .....

but did they do it and it wont take a rocket scientist to do that they could also try a modular type polymar body (like Tevor.... heck if chinese can reverse enginear why cant we)

Good question.Now let me counter it with another one of mine - where is the guarantee that this bullpup version you are propagating (quite justified to be honest) won't meet the same fate as the earlier one and join the ever increasing list of DRDO products that were rejected without trials??You do know the stories of the 185 mm towed artillery piece,the Tank Ex to name a few.

well many things & attitudes change when there is a stronger "leader" who has the guts to say "enof is enof" to the armed forces and NaMo & MP are just those kind of leaders

secondlli if owr dear DODOs make a durable, accurate , light and lesser mantainence needing bullpup version of excalibur im pretty sure IA wont complain to it

at least they should try it like what germans did in making stun gawer assult rifle even after Hitler was opposed to the idea in starting

This news has been in discussion in other forums like defencceforumindia for sometime. What I understand is that, the Multi-Cal rifle Army wants is splitted into two- InIndigenous MCWS for bulk issue and foreign issue for special issue.

And this will take several years to be complete. In the meantime Army is looking for Excalibur as an immediate replacement/complement to the INSAS,which serve us in case the Multi-Cal rifle is delayed further or if the Multi-Cal rifle faces any issue once in service.

This makes the most sense, the Excalibur will simply be the standard the IA induct on a need basis (at present the INSAS 1b1 is the standard being inducted when IA units require new rifles) whilst the MCIWS is pursued for the future standard issue rifle requirement.

Not sure if the IA is going to restart the tender for foreign Multi-cal rifles or not for the specialist (not SF) units or not.


Either way we are still a LONG way from seeing an INSAS replacement being inducted- the IA's procurement and modernisation process is an utter shambles. The BMS might be making good progress but the personal equipment being issued to the regulars (outside of the RR) is an absolute joke and looks ancient. Aside from the SFs the IA hasn't gone for a replacement/upgrade of their standard issue small arms (GPMGs, sniper rifles, DM rifles, carbines, sidearms etc) for DECADES! It is utterly shameful that the WW2-era Bren and Sten are STILL in widespread use in the IA today with no replacements on the horizon.

Well,what else do you expect buddy??What else can anyone expect from a bunch of Gernails,who do not know what they want??Just take a look at the recent RFI issued by the DGMF for their FRCV and you will know what I'm saying.
