Infiltrators keep off
By: MiD DAY Correspondent Date: 2009-08-06 Place: Delhi

While the netas talk only peace, the Army has devised a three-rung system to make the border impenetrable

Even as five rounds of composite dialogue process and a number of high profile visits later the stalemate between India and Pakistan continues, the Indian Army has formulated a new response to one of the most controversial issues between the two countries cross-border infiltration.

Though post 26/11 it was proved beyond doubt that India had left too many porous points for the ultras to enter its territory yet the focal point of cross-border infiltration the Line of Control is in the process of being made insurmountable.

Instead of countering the militants through isolated check posts and patrols, the Indian Army has put in place a three-tier security system along the Line of Control. The system is part of the Army's new counter-insurgency (CI) philosophy.

The first tier of the CI grid begins right at the line of control in the form of border fencing. If a terrorist manages to cross, which happens rarely, then he never escapes the next rounds that are manned by a large number of troops, said a senior army officer, requesting anonymity.

The second ring of security leads to another ring of heavily armed soldiers who form the ultimate line of defence.

"There is no empty patch in the entire areas and the soldiers are posted in a very close-knit formation so that the entire area is covered," the officer said.

The new CI grid has already started paying dividends.

A recent infiltration bid which was occurring simultaneously from five points along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir was not only successfully foiled by the troops but an area commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Noor Mohammad was killed.

The dreaded terrorist Noor Mohammed managed to escape through the border fencing he got killed between the second and the third tier. He was armed with an AK-47 and three magazines while the terrorists killed on other spots were also heavily armed.

Areas under south Kashmir in the Pir Panjal range are the hot bed of terrorism and the most suited for the militants trying to cross over from Pakistan. There has been a sudden spurt in the militant activity as the infiltration becomes almost impossible as the winter sets in.

althougth the BSF tried many ways to stop inflitration and succeded some what this will definately put a noose around the terrorists neck, even if our courts delay the cases (bombay twin blasts given death sentence after 6 years or so), after these scum of the earth are caught after their activities.. Justice WILL be delievered ON the LoC.. and it will NOT be pleasent :smokin::sniper:

BSF does not man the borders in J&K....the Indian Army does.

BSF has been slowly taking over the role of manning the J&K borders from the IA now. They guard the JK border in parts now.

We dont see know border and the freedom fighters can move at will when they want.....they only probing the new defences this time.

lol the IA is toying with your freedom fighters!

Security forces kill 9 militants in J&K- Politics/Nation-News-The Economic Times

Nine militants, including a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander, were killed in six encounters in Jammu and Kashmir

Six encounters in one day! Good target practice for the IA boys. Keep em comin and we l show them the way to their 70 virgins!

Lol, im sure this helps you sleep better at night. Confrontation is no longer an option for either country. India is preparing itself to take center stage in the world economy, these next ten years are crucial.

Pakistan is already in a tight spot, you will put these people (Kashmiri terrorists) down, its only a matter of time. India and the US are already breathing down the GoP's neck. Pakistan needs to focus on fighting its war and the last thing they need is India taking overt military action.

Just yesterday the GoP banned 25 organizations. So I think they can clearly see the border and they've been keeping their dogs on a tight leash.

Kashmir will not be solved with guns.

Kashmir will not be solved with guns.

We don't really "solve" the problem of infiltration , we must eliminate them.

Infiltration was a massive problem for IA in 1990's , it bled a poor nations resources like nothing else , fortunately we've witnessed a quantum leap in our economic status in this decade and found credible allies like Israel who with their ultra-modern sensors and gadgetry specializing in COIN ops. have significantly reduced now.

this 3 layered security sounds really impressive and effiective for good measure , the pigs have tried to enter in big numbers as well as little groups but none work really well.

My only bone to pick is that the life of the Indian soldier at the LoC is not valued enough , the rifles , bullet proof jacket and communication systems need serious improvement , such things will not only help in slaughtering more pigs from coming across the border but will greatly reduce casualties suffered by us.

Nihat, I agree, overwhelming military force is required to crush the insurgency.

When I said Kashmir will never be solved by guns I meant Pakistan must realize that they can never militarily wrest Kashmir from India. It's impossible, they've failed 3 times and lost over half their country in the process.

In their quest for a military solution to the problem, they proliferated a vile and dangerous ideology across the remainder of their land, only to be coerced into fighting the same.

India is large enough to absorb a few attacks, ultimately Pakistan is losing to India and to its own misguided policies. Confrontation with India is way worse for them than it is for us. If Pakistan hopes to become a respectable, regional power, they will have to make radical changes to their current outlook. A simple example of the depth of the problem in that country lies in the fact that there is no clear authority, who's in charge? the Americans? Military? GoP? ISI?

Pakistan needs to alter its current collision course with India and the world. They must take action to stop terrorism, establish a credible, stable political system and work towards economic cooperation in their immediate neighborhood and otherwise.

Indeed , if Pakistan really wanted it could pull the plug on all mujahideens today itself and not one infiltrator would be able to cross over.

Even if they are not actively backed by Pak troops , still they turn a blind eye when these uneducated and brainwashed jihadi's try to cross over.

The time of proxies is now over and as you rightly pointed out , those who play them will be eaten by them in due time . India too played it's fair share of proxy wars with Pak (notably 1971) but that time is now well behind us.

India has enough wealth to sustain those 7,00,000 troops in J&K to stop infiltration but question is how long can Pakistan turn a blind eye to it in a dynamic and ever changing world where jihad and mujaheddin are considered dirty words.
