Industrial corridor to expedite devpt
RANCHI: Jharkhand Inc is happy with the Centre's decision to construct the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) on the lines of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) as this will provide the best road connectivity in the country.

The corridor will pass through places like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Saharanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna and will connect Hazaribag and Dhanbad to Asansol, Durgapur and Kolkata.

"If the Centre is able to execute the project, it will be a boon for Jharkhand. It will transform the face of the state as it will create job opportunity for thousands of families living around the industrial corridor in Hazaribag and Dhanbad," said Ranjeet Tibrewal, president, Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI).

Jharkhand, which is a landlocked state, lacked proper roads that would connect it to the sea ports in Odisha and West Bengal and the proposed corridor would help overcome that drawback, said Tibrewal.

DMIC uses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone. Similarly, AKIC will use the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone.

The Eastern DFC extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata in West Bengal. AKIC will be structured around the Eastern DFC and also the highway network that exists on this route.

However, industrialists did not rule out the problem of land acquisition that has forced global majors like ArcelorMittal and Tata Steel to retreat.

ArcelorMittal and Tata Steel could not acquire land for their proposed greenfield steel plants even after eight years of signing an MoU with the state government. The two companies had signed MoU in 2005 but have failed to acquire land. ArcelorMittal could not get the desired result even after shifting the site of the proposed plant from Gumla to Bokaro due to stiff resistance from villagers.

"Land acquisition is a major problem in the state but I hope that people of Hazaribagh and Dhanbad will realise the importance of the project for economic growth of the state and not raise obstacle," said Tibrewal.
