Indonesia's Presidential Election 2014

Ikrar points out this inconsistency in Prabowo’s approach to foreign policy, saying his emphasis on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s “Good Neighbor” policy does not align with his military plans.

“On one hand, he always mentions good neighborly relations… But then he says we want to expand our military capabilities,” Ikrar says. “He tried to use the terms used by SBY — ‘One enemy is too many, a thousand friends are too few.”

Conflicting good neighborly relations with military capabilities... he is an expert in mass communication! and now he talks as if he is an expert military strategy?? typical TV commentator, doesn't really know anything about what he's talking

I know which candidate I prefer ;)

The presidential campaign team of the Gerindra Party’s Prabowo Subianto had to face the music on Wednesday following the circulation of a tribute video that many said promoted Nazism.

The campaign video has caused an international uproar with major news outlets in the West, including Germany’s news magazine Der Spiegel, weighing in on how far the creator of the video, rock musician Ahmad Dhani, had promoted Nazism.

In the video, which was a rip-off of the British band Queen’s classic hit “We Will Rock You”, Dhani dons black paramilitary attire and holds a golden Garuda — Indonesia’s national emblem — which looks like the German imperial eagle.

Der Spiegel pointed out that Dhani’s military costume was similar to the uniform worn by SS commander Heinrich Himmler. “Dhani wears the same emblem on the lapel and the same red breast-pocket lining,” it said on Tuesday, comparing photos of the two in a photo gallery.

Queen guitarist Brian May joined the fray by sending a tweet saying that the song had won no approval from him. “Of course this is completely unauthorized by us.”

When the video was first uploaded on Prabowo’s official Facebook page, the presidential candidate thanked Dhani and the other performers in the video, namely Indonesian Idol winner Nowela Elizabeth Auparay and fellow Idol contestant Husein Alatas. Dhani is a judge on the Idol TV show.

Dhani, who is partly Jewish, however, said that he had been misunderstood.

“If I wear a Star of David then regular folks will call me a Zionist and when I wear a Nazi uniform then these same folks will call me a fascist […] Once a simpleton, always a simpleton,” Dhani said in a tweet sent to his 1.35 million followers on Twitter.

Fellow musicians have responded to the video with outrage.

Indonesian-born, Paris-based singer-songwriter Anggun criticized Dhani for being insensitive, saying in a tweet that she was “shocked, disappointed, ashamed and sad” at seeing Dhani sporting Himmler’s attire.

“Wearing the uniform of Hitler’s confidant reminds people about the brutality [of the Nazi regime] and brings back pain to the millions of victims’ families,” she said. “I pray for Indonesia that it won’t fall into fascism!”

Musician Glenn Fredly said Dhani had made a fool of himself and the whole country.

“If you want to use the presidential election to get attention, well you have just succeeded! Succeeded in humiliating yourself,” he said.

An Indonesian living in Frankfurt, Prihantini, said she was ashamed about what Dhani had done.

“As an Indonesian living in Germany, it pains me to see how some people choose to ignore certain things in the world because I sincerely believe that it’s not simply ignorance. They are too educated to be stupid,” she told The Jakarta Post. “Mass killing is not cool, whoever the perpetrators and the victims were.”

When asked about the video, a spokesman for Prabowo’s campaign team, Tantowi Yahya, said that the team had nothing to do with the video.

“That’s purely his [Dhani’s] creativity. An artist must think outside of the box; if you don’t do that then you are [just like] regular folk,” Tantowi said.

Political observer Ray Rangkuti called for the removal of the video from YouTube, saying that “it could lead other nations to think that people in the country had endorsed crimes against humanity”.

As of Wednesday evening, two YouTube links posted by Dhani from his Twitter account had been removed, though copies of the video had already gone viral.

Indonesian markets watch presidential debate

Updated Wed 11 Jun 2014, 1:23pm AEST

Indonesia's stock markets rose more than one per cent yesterday after the first presidential debate of the election campaign.

Analysts have told the ABC that one reason was the performance of Joko Widodo, the candidate who is mainly favoured by investors.

Jokowi, as he's called, has presented a pro-reform platform as investment cools and the country faces large budget and current account deficits.

He's the frontrunner, but his lead over Prabowo Subianto has narrowed.

Indonesia correspondent Helen Brown is speaking with Business Today's Whitney Fitzsimmons.

JAKARTA (AFP/Reuters) - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo declared victory on Wednesday in Indonesia's tightest and most divisive presidential race since the downfall of former president Suharto, which has pitted him against former general Prabowo Subianto.

It came after unofficial tallies from polling agencies showed him leading with around 53 per cent of the vote against Mr Prabowo's 47 per cent.

Flanked by members of his Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in the capital, Mr Joko said: "We would like to greatly thank all the Indonesian people... as well as party members who worked hard from morning to evening." He is popularly known as "Jokowi".

Mr Prabowo is still confident of winning the election, a senior Prabowo party official said, dismissing claims of victory by rival Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. “It’s too early to say that (Jokowi has won). This is still in the quick count stage and several TV stations have different results. The final result will be July 22 by the KPU (Election Commission) so (we are) still optimistic that Prabowo (has won),” vice-chairman of Mr Prabowo’s Gerindra party Fadli Zon told Reuters.

Jakarta Gov. Jokowi wins Indonesian election
Opponent, former Gen. Prabowo Subianto, withdrew from race, alleging widespread voter fraud

July 22, 2014 8:03AM ET
Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo, who won the hearts of Indonesians with his common-man image, garnered 53 percent of the vote in Indonesia's presidential election, final results from the Election Commission showed Tuesday.

The numbers were released shortly after his opponent, former Gen. Prabowo Subianto, declared he was withdrawing from the contest, saying there was fraud during the election and that it was unfair and undemocratic.

Widodo, a former furniture maker known widely as "Jokowi," maintained a slim lead of about 4 percentage points in unofficial quick counts by polling agencies released after the July 9 election.

But Subianto, who has declared assets of $140 million and was on his third bid for the presidency, repeatedly claimed that polling firms with links to his campaign showed he was ahead. "We reject the 2014 presidential election, which is unlawful, and therefore we withdraw from the ongoing process," he said.

There were no immediate reports of violence. About 100 Subianto supporters held a peaceful protest some 300 yards from the Election Commission building in downtown Jakarta, chanting "Prabowo is the real president" and holding banners demanding that the commission stop cheating.

The building was surrounded by thousands of policemen to maintain security after a particularly nasty presidential campaign. It was the first election that pitted two candidates directly against each other since the Muslim majority country of 240 million emerged from the long and brutal Suharto dictatorship 16 years ago.

Supporters of both men used social media for personal attacks, and Subianto's supporters led a smear campaign against Widodo, spreading rumors he is not a Muslim.

The commission was to formally declare the winner later Tuesday evening.

Final results showed that Widodo won 70,997,859 votes, or 53.15 percent of the nearly 133 million valid ballots cast, while Subianto won 62,576,444 votes, or 46.85 percent.

Voter turnout was 70.7 percent.
