Those horrible pictures has been debunked and come from ethnic conflict that is true horrible between Madurese and Dayak ethnic in Kalimantan island (Google the word "Sampit conflict") and maybe during Ambon conflict between Muslim vs Christian. There were massacres and killings after the fall of the Soeharto regime (after the riots of '98), but as I mentioned before, those killings are not directed against Chinese Indonesians (nor were they the main victims).. Most of those killings happened during the bloody interethnic fighting in Kalimantan between the Dayaks and the Madurese (both native Indonesian ethnics), during the sectarian fighting in Ambon between Muslim and Christian Ambonese (both are also native Indonesians), and also sectarian violence in Sulawesi.

The years between 1997 - 2004 is basically a very shitty time to be living in Indonesia, first the Asian Financial Crises, then the riots of '98, then the fall of the government, the weakening of the armed forces, the separation of East Timor, the bloody interethnic fightings, the sectarian fightings, and later the rise of jihad by extremists groups with bombings in Jakarta, Bali and elsewhere...

I along with any other average American can access CGTN, Xinhua, and other english Chinese media all the time. I do not need a VPN to access these sites. My internet speed does not slow down suddenly when I'm on these sites.

However you can't do the same.
