Lapan Anxious as N219 Certifications Face Delays

Jakarta. National Space and Aviation Agency, or Lapan, may need to deal with another delay in development of small propeller plane N219 as the aircraft is yet to complete certification processes at the Transport Ministry.

The aircraft need to clear the permits before initiating a test flight, which was initially scheduled for June before being moved back to August.

"Now, we just hope that all the process can be completed soon, so we can meet our production schedule in 2017," said Jasyanto, a Lapan spokesman.

"We have to be thorough to ensure the air plane safety," Jasyanto said, adding that the agency is adamant the aircraft will comply with international safety standards.

Lapan developed the N219 with state aircraft producer Dirgantara Indonesia to rejuvenate Indonesia's airspace industry.

The 19-seat aircraft is designed to meet demands for small carriers in remote regions. Lion Air, Indonesia's largest budget airline, Nusantara Buana Air, Aviastar Mandiri and Trigana Air Service have placed order for 150 units of N219.

Airbus Group to help with certification for Indonesian plane

Airbus Group reportedly plans to help Indonesia’s aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) obtain certification for its homegrown commuter category plane N219.

"Airbus will help Indonesia with the certification, which hopefully will conclude by the end of this year," PT DI president director Budi Santoso said on Wednesday.

He made his statement following a meeting with Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, which was also attended by Fernando Alonso, head of military aircraft at Airbus Group subsidiary Airbus Defense and Space.

The state-owned company was planning to sell the N219 starting in 2017, Budi said, adding that PT DI aimed to exceed the target of selling 60 of the 19-seat planes in the opening year.

Due to the technicalities and certification issues, N219 flight tests were pushed back to August after initially being scheduled for May and June. The N219 is the first locally produced commuter developed since the N250 in 1998. (bbn)

Indonesian Aircraft Maker Showcases N219 Cockpit Simulator

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Indonesian aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is showcasing its new product, N219 cockpit simulator, at the Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 being held from September 8 - 11.

"We are showcasing CN235 model and N219 cockpit simulator," the spokesperson of PTDDI, Irland Budiman, said on Friday.

The simulator is the main attraction at the PTDI booth as visitors are allowed piloting the N219 and fly as if they are in N219.

Irland said N219 was included in the booth of best innovation products created by Indonesian human resources.

N219 is a multi-purpose twin-engine aircraft designed to be operated in remote areas. It is a developed version of NC212, produced by PTDI under CASAs license.

Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 is witnessing the participation of 118 companies with 700 subsidiaries and 1,100 local government enterprises.

The event, which features the BUMN (the state-owned enterprises) awards, an exhibition, an international conference, seminars, and many other programs, is being held under the theme: State-owned Enterprises are Agents of Development.

The Expo is a platform to promote and market various innovative products as well as an opportunity for stakeholders to explore investment opportunities.

Small N219 Aircraft To Be Produced In 2017: LAPAN

West Lombok, NTB, (Antara) - The National Aviation and Outer Space Institute (LAPAN) said small N219 aircraft would be produced next year to serve routes to isolated areas that could not be served by big aircraft in Indonesia.

"The design has been available. The target is that production of N219, a 19-seat aircraft would begin in 2017," head of LAPN Prof Thomas Djamaluddin said after giving general lecture at the opening of an "International Seminar on Aerospace Science and Technology" (ISAST) in the tourist resort of Senggigi, regency of West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

Earlier during the administration of President Soeharto, the country planned to produce 50-seat N250 aircraft, to serve flights to isolated areas.

However, the plan failed to come to reality as a result of the economic crisis in 1998 and the downfall later of the president, Thomas Djamaluddin said here on Tuesday.

In addition, producers of big bodied aircraft refused to support the Indonesian program fearing that small aircraft would be potential competitor for their products, he said.

LAPAN, therefore, is asked again to design aircraft to serve routes to open isolated areas and the result is the N219 type.

"The plan to produce N219 is facing less competition, although there was still competition from other countries. We, however, are set to start production in 2017 that Indonesia could win the domestic market before competitors are coming," he said.

The N219 aircraft is a product of collaboration , first between LAPAN and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI) and second collaboration between the two agencies was that LAPAN helped in making the design and PT DI, the aircraft maker in Bandung, would do the production.

Djamaluddin said N219 is designed for domestic use but he did not rule out exporting the aircraft to other countries as a number of countries like Laos and African countries have expressed interest in the aircraft after they were given details of the plan by Indonesian embassies.

"In the country, there are already airlines planning to use N219 aircraft to serve flights to isolated areas, which have no airport large enough to accommodate big bodied aircraft," he said. (*)
