Indonesia starts construction of high-speed rail line

Published January 21, 2016

Associated Press

WALINI, Indonesia – Indonesia broke ground on a high-speed rail line between the capital Jakarta and Bandung, officially marking the start of the three-year construction project.

The 142.3 kilometer (88.4 mile) railway worth $5.5 billion is being constructed by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China, a joint venture between an Indonesian consortium and China Railway International Co. Ltd.

The groundbreaking ceremony Thursday was presided over by Indonesia's President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

The construction kicked off in Walini, a West Java town and location of one of the railway's eight stations.

The rail deal was signed in October after Indonesia selected China over Japan for the project.

The trains are expected start operating in early 2019 with speeds of 250 kilometers (155 miles) an hour.

I think it is the second time there are join companies made between Indonesia state owned companies and China state owned companies...

Before we made Suramadu bridge together as well in Indonesia

This consortium already eyeing Jakarta-Surabaya HSR project. And for project compatibility and continuity, they decide to use train that can move over 350km/hour although the operational speed for Jakarta-Bandung route is only around 200Km/hour.

That's an impressive looking bridge, too, buddy ! Looks like China has done great in Indonesia , to the benefit of Indonesian people !

Haha, well, this is going to definitely drive more competition between Japanese and Chinese brothers ! What can i say? Indonesia is a HUGE market with ample potential for investment and high ROI (return on investment) ! Good Job Chinese Brothers in your success, but don't get too comfortable, eh? We can't have you all to enjoy the Indonesian pie. You need to share the pie with Japan ;)

Here' is to great competition ! To Japan, China, and most importantly here is to INDONESIA !

I think It is, after making Suramadu together with China engineers assistance and financing, we then have more braveness to make this one in Bali island by using our own state owned companies consortium.

Govt Eyes Investment, Taxes as Fast Train Construction Kicks Offi

Jakarta.
President Joko Widodo on Thursday launched the construction phase of the China-funded Jakarta-Bandung fast train, marking the country's first such endeavor and opening up a host of investment opportunities in the sector.

The project, launched in West Bandung district on Thursday, is set to be completed in 2018 and will start operations in 2019.

The project will employ as many as 20,000 local workers and boost investment in various railway-related sectors, Franky Sibarani, the head of Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), said in a statement.

"A rolling stock company has assessed the location to build a plant in Purwakarta [West Java]. An assembling company and an aluminum slab producer did the same in Surabaya," Franky said.

According to Franky, the $5.5 billion project will also contribute more than $450 million in state revenue through the procurement of goods and services alone over the next three years.

"The railway construction will also boost investment in services, trade, property and tourism as new cities and new economic centers grow," he said.

The 142-kilometer railway will stretch from Halim in East Jakarta to Tegalluar, 13 kilometers southeast of the Bandung city center.

There will be four stops along the railway -- Halim, Karawang, Walini and Tegalluar -- around which the government is planning to launch massive residential and commercial property development projects to support population growth in the region.

The Kereta Api Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) joint venture between Chinese and Indonesian state owned enterprises —including builder Wijaya Karya, toll road operator Jasa Marga, railway operator KAI and plantation company Perkebunan Nusantara VIII — is responsible for the railway and the property development, with financing from the China Development Bank.

Global consultancy firms W.S. Atkins, Aedas and Surbana Jurong are involved in drawing up plans for transit-oriented development along the route.
