Russia started the first day at an arms show in Jakarta with a contract on the delivery of munitions for Sukhoi-family fighters to Indonesia, worth $54 million, a senior defense official said on Wednesday.

Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said in October that his country would continue buying arms from Russia in the future.

The Indo Defense 2010 Expo & Forum opened on November 10 in Jakarta to host over 400 exhibitors from 38 countries until November 13. Nine Russian defense companies are exhibiting various types of sophisticated weaponry at the biennial arms fair.

"Russia's [arms exporter] Rosoboronexport signed a contract on the delivery of munitions for Su-family fighters in service with the Indonesian armed forces," said Mikhail Pukhov, deputy director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation.

Indonesia may buy Russian Yak-130s

A Russian Yak-130 combat training plane is among the favorites to win a purchase contract with Indonesia.

Talks are also under way about the supply of six Russian Sukhoi fighter jets, Viktor Komardin, Deputy General Director of Russia’s Rosobornexport state-owned company, announced on Thursday at the Indo Defense-2010 arms show in Jakarta.

Earlier, Indonesia bought 10 Su-27 and Su-30 planes from Russia.

They're going for the wrong choice. They should have bought upgraded MiG-29s or MiG-31s. They're much more better for air superiority missions. Sukhoi family with Multi-role capability will only rile regional nations like Australia and Malaysia.

They already have SU-30 MK2.. maybe further orders..

First day of Russian arms show in Indonesia, a Sukhoi jet crashes killing all on board.

Wreckage of missing plane found in Indonesia

Indonesian officials say they have found the wreckage of a Russian passenger jet that disappeared on a flight from Jakarta yesterday.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 disappeared from radar screens yesterday afternoon near Mount Salak, an eroded volcano south of Jakarta.

The plane was carrying around 50 people on a demonstration flight when it went down.

Bad weather hampered the search, but an official from a small airport in the region says a helicopter team has spotted wreckage around 2,000 down the slopes of the mountain.

Juanda, a 41-year-old who lives in a village near Mount Salak, said he was feeding his chickens on Wednesday when he heard a roar overhead.

"I looked up and saw a huge white plane moving unsteadily just slightly below the mountain summit," he said.

"It was still way above the trees but veering left and right, and then it disappeared.

"I heard a sound like firecrackers, but I couldn't see it anymore."

By midnight on Wednesday, hundreds of rescuers had set up three posts around Mount Salak as they prepared to resume their mission at dawn on Thursday.

Sukhoi has been promoting the new jet to airlines in south-east Asia and hopes it will reinvigorate its ailing business.

There is no indication yet of what caused the crash.
