Indonesia Officially Announced as Host of 2021 U-20 FIFA World Cup

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo met Gianni Infantino, the president of world football governing body FIFA, during the Asean Summit in Bangkok on Saturday to thank him for Indonesia's selection as host of the U-20 World Cup in 2021.

"I met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino shortly after my arrival in Bangkok... I thanked him for selecting Indonesia as host of the 2021 U-20 World Cup," Jokowi posted on Instagram on Saturday.

He said the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) will be happy to work with FIFA's advance team to organize the tournament.

"[Indonesia] is home to more than 1,600 football clubs. More than 77 percent of Indonesians say they love football," Jokowi told Infantino during their meeting, shown in a short video on Instagram.

Jokowi told Infantino Indonesia has prepared 10 stadiums on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Bali for the world football event.

PSSI on Saturday elected a new chairman, Comr. Gen.Mochamad Iriawan, a former Jakarta Police chief, in an extraordinary congress in Jakarta.

Jokowi has also urged newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister Zainul Amali to pay special attention to the country's football scene, which has been dogged by match-fixing scandals for years and whose national team has not won an international title since the 1991 SEA Games.

Thanks bro, we are preparing our U 19 team currently to compete on the world cup and the preparation is quite good, they can win 1:0 against Iran U 19 and 4:1 against China U 19.

The event will likely to be postpone into 2022. And if that is the case so the new stadium built in Jakarta can be use as another venue for the event.

Elkan Baggot, whose mother is Indonesian, and previously played in England, will play for Indonesia U 20 and become Indonesian citizen. He is still 18 years old and has 194 cm high. He will play as a defender.

U 20 and Senior team start practicing. The coach is from South Korea, previously was the coach of South Korea national team. They intend to practice in South Korea previously but still thinking about the possibility since they need to get quarantined for 14 days that can hamper the training schedule.

The 2021 U-20 Soccer World Cup, which Indonesia will host for the first time, may take place behind closed doors due to the pandemic, a minister has said. Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said the government would soon announce whether spectators would be allowed inside the stadiums during the matches next year as authorities monitored the pandemic.

"We need to assess the situation in May and June," Amali said on Tuesday. "We'll implement [strict] health protocols based on guidelines set by the National COVID-19 task force and FIFA," he went on, adding that authorities should also take into account whether coronavirus vaccines -- if available – were distributed evenly at that time next year.

Amali further ensured that the government would put public health as its main priority during the event. There was also possibility that spectators would be able to fill the stadium at half capacity. The decision, Amali said, would lay in FIFA's hands. Six stadiums will host the matches, namely Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Manahan Stadium in Surakarta, Central Java; Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, East Java; and Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium in Gianyar, Bali; Sriwijaya Stadium in Palembang; South Sumatra and Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, West Java.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo announced earlier that Indonesia would host the three-week competition despite the pandemic. "We have to convince [other countries] that Indonesia has set strict health protocols [for the event] so our country is very safe for visits and hosting the 2021 U-20 soccer World Cup," he said on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, Indonesia recorded a total of 368,842 coronavirus cases, with 293,653 recoveries and 12,734 fatalities. (nal)

FIFA U 20 2021 is cancelled by FIFA and Indonesia will be host in FIFA U 20 2023.

I think it is a good decision so FIFA U 20 2023 will likely use two big and modern stadium in Jakarta which is GBK stadium and JIS stadium.

Since they have practiced quite a long time, I suggest Indonesia use this U 20 team for ASEAN Games 2021 that will be played in Vietnam around December next year. I think yes although don’t know. I am not much interested in sports unless Germany plays the World Cup. I play chess. That’s the most nerve kicking sport. Gary Kasparov the former Soviet world chess champion likens playing chess is like going to war. You see your opponent as enemy. There isn’t no mercy.
