Turkey and Indonesia are working on several defense projects, including an armored personnel carrier and remotely steered weapons systems, an official from Indonesia’s state-owned defense manufacturer PT Pindad has said.

PT Pindad innovation and product development manager, Windu Paramarta, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the KAPLAN MT tanks – jointly developed by Turkey’s FNSS Defense Industries Company and PT Pindad – have advanced to the production phase. He added that 18 tanks will be manufactured in the next two years for Indonesian armed forces.

The KAPLAN MT is powered by a power pack located at the rear of the vehicle, which delivers a power-to-weight ratio of about 20 horsepower per ton. The engine transfers this power to the driving system, which has a six-wheel, anti-shock suspension system with double-pinned tracks mounted on torsion bars.

The tank-class vehicle brings together state-of-the-art modern technology platforms with superior firepower, supported by battlefield management systems and laser warning systems, providing tactical support to the commander.

Firepower is provided by a CMI Cockerill 3105 turret, integrated with a high-pressure 105-millimeter Cockerill gun and an advanced autoloader. Thanks to the turret, the KAPLAN MT has high firepower despite its relatively low weight.

Noting that two countries are currently working on the development of armored personnel carriers and remotely steered weapons systems, Paramarta said preliminary meetings were also underway for the prototype of carrier project. Process for other projects including design of remote weapons systems are expected to be completed this year, he added.

@Indus, is Indonesia interested in AKSUNGUR? I heard about some co-development a few years ago?

I dont know since we are currently developing our own MALE UCAV, Elang Hitam UAV.

The cooperation is in the form of testing Anka and Aksungur using Indonesian Low Speed Wind Tunnel.

Here is the statement from TAI official regarding Aksungur:

Currently, TAI is also collaborating with BBTA3 for the fifth time in testing the UAV system's payload capacity in ILST to obtain aerodynamic characteristic data for the latest unmanned aircraft being developed by TAI

"We greatly appreciate BPPT's contribution through BBTA3 for the success of the development of our UAV product lineup and this is crucial to maintaining a useful collaboration for years to come," said Tamer.

Yup, thank you bro. According to the latest official statement, one prototype will fly before the beginning of 2021 inshaAllah. And for the armored personnel carrier being developed together with Turkey if I am not mistaken is intended for Marine force with amphibious capability.

Based on Indonesia Defense Ministry proposed budget for 2021, there are budget for second Harimau/Kaplan MT contract. Indonesia look like to acquire Harimau MT in stages. First contract is only for 18 tanks.

Do you know the depth the tank can swim at?

European countries jointly build defence goods but Muslim countries don’t do that. We need to form one company and share R&D cost so they don’t have to buy defense equipment from other countries.

.
Can you imagine if we have One Company? we can build small arms, ammunition, APC, IFV, Tanks, Helicopter, fighter jest, UAV, and boats. It will help us develop our local defense industry much faster and better.

If you have One company for all,it will be a disaster.
Without competition you will not get the best possible.
The developments will be slower and most likely inferior to others.

I think single company for many Muslim countries are not visible although European has achieved that with Airbus. I would rather want to see more JV between Muslim countries which have good defense sectors like what is happening between PT PINDAD and FNSS. So by joining at the same project they can minimize the cost and enlarge the market.

Actually Turkey has also done it in the old time like with their CN 235 production line. And if Turkey is successful with their effort in developing jet engine for their jet fighter, Indonesia can also use the engine for Indonesian own jet fighter project.

Currently Indonesia is with South Korea with KFX/IFX joint project, but after 2035 I predict Indonesia will try to develop its own jet fighter by using Turkish engine (possibly sanction free). Especially if our economy can keep growing more than 5 % until that year and our R&D program will be boosted right after we got a better leader after November 2024 inshaAllah.

It doesn't have to be one company but multiple companies like Airbus and MBDA and allowing private companies to flourish by not adding road blocks so there is a healthy competition.
