Indonesia High Speed Train Development Program

Target is to build train with speed more than 200 km per hour.

The program is a collaboration of 9 state owned Universities, Government Research Agency, and PT INKA (Train maker)

This is the current design

The train is intended to serve Makassar-Pare Pare train route in Sulawesi Island

Makassar-Pare Pare route at 140 km long is just the start because Indonesia government long term planning program is to add another 4000 km long train railway (whole Indonesia) from now until 2030.

At the moment Indonesia only has 6000 km long train railway that is mainly concentrated in Java Island.

Development program is already entering prototyping phase this year. The first prototype construction is expected to be completed this year in 2023. I will try to update when the prototype is ready and being tested.

The train uses hybrid system (diesel and battery). The hybrid system is used because Sulawesi Island electricity infrastructure is not yet ready to support electricity-based train system.

Propulsion system will be Diesel engine-Battery. Generating electricity using diesel engine and stored in battery system.

Maximum speed is 220 km per hour.

Using battery as propulsion is not the first time for PT INKA as they have made it 2 years ago, but it is not considered as high-speed train like the new development.

Indonesian developers also see the opportunity for the program to serve Jakarta-Surabaya route in Java Island.

BPPT (Gov Research Agency) and state owned train manufacturer, PT INKA, are involved in this program.

Other parties involved are PT Barata, PT Pindad, PT LEN Industry and PT INTI (all are state owned companies specializing in heavy industry and electronics), state owned universities (ITB/ITS/UI/UNS), and another Gov research Agency (LIPI).

BPPT is under BRIN

The train has been send to Sulawesi Island and will serve Makassar-Pare Pare route with 220 kilometer speed per hour. It has been send but not yet operated. The interview is very recent, 2 days ago.

The train with hybrid technology spotted as background of the interview. They will go inside the train later.

High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail system that runs significantly faster than traditional rail, using an integrated system of specialised rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single standard that applies worldwide, lines built to handle speeds above 250 km/h (155 mph) or upgraded lines in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph) are widely considered to be high-speed.

The head design still uses older INKA train design but it has used hybrid technology (battery and diesel) and probably better airframe. Regardless of that, the train speed is already 220 kilometer per hour. The railway is also different with railway in Java. Rail way in Makassar-Pare Pare route is designed to serve high speed train.

This design may be used in other route which is Jakarta-Surabaya and we still need to wait and possibly with the less drag design it could possibly reach 300 kilometer per hour
