KOMPAS.com - A post mentioning a battery-powered train trial on May 28, 2023 in Madiun, went viral on social media TikTok.

The upload was uploaded by @ingposarembotensepele TikTok account.

"Today Sunday, May 28, 2023, a battery-powered train trial or battery tram will be carried out. Uniquely, the trial was carried out on the railway line in the direction of the Pertamina Depot in front of INKA Madiun City," said the voice in the video.

The video was uploaded on Monday (29/5/2023). As of Wednesday (31/5/2023), the upload has been viewed more than 46,000 times and liked by more than 2,350 accounts.

Various comments appeared regarding the upload.

INKA Explained

Related to the upload, Senior Manager of Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) and Stakeholder Relationship of PT INKA (Persero) Bambang Ramadhiarto explained, the train that went viral in the video was a train made by PT INKA (Persero).

"If the train has been produced by INKA since 2018, then it has developed into an autonomous system in collaboration with ITB," said Bambang when contacted by Kompas.com, Wednesday (31/5/2023).

He confirmed that the train was being tested on the railway line in the direction of the Pertamina Depot in front of INKA Madiun City on Sunday (28/5/2023), as seen in the viral video.

He explained, the train is currently still in the research and development stage.

"The research target for the second year is the end of June 2023, and the plan is to continue the third year (next year)," he explained.

According to him, the train at the beginning of development used a 62 kWh battery.

The current battery capacity is upgraded to 200 kWh with a range or drive range of 90 km on a single charge.

"The speed used to be 15 km / h, we upgraded to 60 km / h," he said.

He explained, one series of trains consists of 2 cars (trains). Currently, the train is under autonomous system testing with the ITB team.

PT INKA and ITB (Institute Technology Bandung) have made hybrid train with both diesel and battery powered propulsion system.

The train has been send to Sulawesi Island and will serve Makassar-Pare Pare route with 220 kilometer speed per hour. It has been send but not yet operated. The interview was in April 2023.

The train with hybrid technology spotted as background of the interview. They will go inside the train later.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Tatacipta Dirgantara said the prototype of the Merah Putih high-speed train is targeted for completion in 2023. "The train's development speed is 250 kilometers per hour," he said, Saturday, January 7, 2023.

The fast train will be used to cross the Trans Sulawesi Makassar-Pare Pare line. The plan to operate the fast train in Sulawesi is at the end of this year.

ITB and a number of other tertiary institutions were involved in making high-speed trains in collaboration with PT Industri Kereta Api (Inka) and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), as well as involving other BUMNs (state owned enterprises)

According to Tata, the width of the high-speed train track is 1,435 meters or the same as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train. Carrying the latest high-speed train control technology, the weight of the rides must also be light. "We use lightweight materials such as train bodies using aluminum and composite materials," said the lecturer in the lightweight structure research group at ITB. While the wheel drive uses electric power.

Besides being lightweight, the fast train also has the concept of having intelligence and hybrid. Intelligence is built from integrated information and communication systems by utilizing the latest technology. The goal is that the train can drive and stop at the destination station independently. As for the hybrid concept, which is an electric-powered train produced first from a diesel engine and stored in a battery.

The design of the Merah Putih high-speed train, according to Tata, is similar to similar transportation in other countries. In the initial stage, the high-speed train will operate on the Makassar-Pare-pare line along 140 kilometers by passing through seven stations. The government targets the addition of railway lines from 6,000 to 10 thousand kilometers by 2030.

By the end of 2022, the team had completed the design and calculations with additional optimizations on several parts of the railway. The results of the design and calculations are already at the stage of making prototypes by PT Inka, which is predicted to be completed in 2023.
