Indonesia city to ban women 'straddling motorbikes'

Literal translation of 'Bhineka Tunggal Ika' is 'Many Unite into One' and not 'unity in diversity'.

Hindus in Indonesia has been forced into monotheism due to your constitution permitting only 'belief in one god'.

Their Agama tantra has been twisted from defining god as 'achintya' or 'one who is beyond comprehension' into 'Sanghyang Widi Wasa' which was the christian god.

The translation would be "bhinneka (divergent, different, diversity) Tunggal (One) Ika (that, it is, is) - Divergent (diversity), (that) is one". 'many unite into one' or 'unity among diversity' are both Literal translation, both have similar meanings.

Balinese Hinduism has been using the term of 'all-in-one god' or Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa a term invented by Christian missionaries in 1930 to describe 'god' or 'the almighty', it was later also being used by Hindu Dharma to describe their own 'almighty' In case you don't know, our constitution was formed in 1945. How can we force them into monotheism while our constitution was formed 15 years after the term was invented.

Anyway, Balinese Hinduism is using the concept of monotheism since long ago, they are Hindu Dharma, existed long before Indonesia exist.
In the Hindu religion in general, the concept used is monotheism. The concept is known as Adwaita Vedanta philosophy, which means "second to none". Ideally the concept of God in the other monotheistic religions, Adwaita Vedanta assume that God is the center of all life in the universe, and in Hinduism, God is known as Brahman.
In Hindu belief, Brahman is something that has no beginning but no end. Brahman is the creator and the universe buster. Brahman is everywhere and fills the entire universe. Brahman is the origin of everything that exists in the world. Everything that exists in the universe is subject to Brahman without exception. In this concept, the gods position equated with angels and worshiped as God reluctant to separate, but praised his services as intermediaries of God to his people.
Adwaita Vedanta philosophy assumes no equivalent to Brahman, the creator of the universe. In the Hindu faith, there is only one Brahman, is second to none, but the wise call it by various names according to the nature of the almighty. The names of the greatness of God and then translated into various forms of deities, such as: Vishnu, Brahma, Shiva, Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati, and others. Dharma in Hinduism (particularly in Bali), the concept of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa is a form of monotheism native Balinese.

Balinese Hindus themselves were monotheists.

About the constitution, you must be taking the meaning from the first point of our constitution right? Ketuhan Yang Maha Esa 'one almighty deity', that meaning is not forcing you to be a monotheist, I find it very difficult to explain it to you in english because this is a linguistic misinterpretation problem, if only you could speak Indonesian, it will be very easy for me to explain it.
But here's the conclusion: the meaning of the one almighty deity doesn't mean God is only one. Instead of referring to an individual that we call God the number one, it is actually 'Belief in God 'the Almighty'.

Don't worry about explaining in such detail, u have done a very good job. People away from a place cannot so easily make out things happening there. By the way your knowledge on Hindu belief is very good have u studied it specifically?

@zaxocolix give him a break will u, he is done very well here and u are accusing him of what i cannot understand? surely u can't hold nufix for this law ??

Nope, I have never learned it specifically. But the teaching of basic concept of 2 ancient religions in Indonesia (Hinduism and Buddhism) is a compulsory subject in elementary school and middle school because both religions are strongly related to our history and cultures. That's why although Islam is dominating, the cultures are never far from Hinduism and Buddhism influence, therefore, most Indonesian children understand a little about Hinduism and Buddhism, unfortunately that's only limited to the things that related to the history and cultures. I think I should go to the nearest temple to seek the bigger picture of Hinduism teachings.

This is why Foreigner should shut up about a country they know little about. Hindu/Animist in Indonesia have multiple of deities & they are free to worship.

The problem is that some clerics bring religion into everything. There is nothing religious about it, its just a safety issue.

Its like saying wear safety belts is mandatory because Sharia says that muslims should guard their lives.

I mean its just a safety issue, but when they bring religion into it needlessly, it invites criticism in todays world.

Eka (Ika) is number 'one’ in Sanskrit / old Javanese
Ann-eka (bhinn-eka) is ‘not one / many’ in Sanskrit (old Javanese)
Tunggal is ‘unity’ in Balinese

You can put it together....

I was not aware Indonesian Hindus followed Advaita Vedanta since most of their religious practice seems Agama based and not Vedic in nature.

BTW dwaita means ‘dual’ in Sanskrit, A-dwaita means ‘Non Dual’

Vedanta means ‘end of Vedas’ (final objective of Veda’s) or in todays language ‘Philosophy’.

Advaita Vedanta – literally means ‘Philosophy of Non Duality’ and not ‘second to none’

Just to correct you, Adwaita talks about Brahman not as God but as the absolute reality. Everything else is ‘Mithya/Maya’ or ‘Illusion’. ..a bit like the movie Matrix (which was based on Advaita philosophy)

In Adwaita, Man living in his illusionary world worship Brahman as ‘Is-vara’ (literally ‘The Lord’) in the form of Deities (Vishnu, Shiva & Devi). The Deity after ‘Prana pratistha’ (awakening life in the Deity) is the manifestation of the absolute reality in the illusionary world.

Thanks for clarifying what the constitution really means. Outsiders are compelled to look at other cultures with our own experiences and hence its easy to draw wrong conclusion. I hope your explanation is the correct one.

...this thread is about 'lack of freedom for Indonesian women to ride bikes' ...if you have nothing else to offer..you should shut up and stick to the topic.

..break from what ? he is free not to answer.

Hindus of this forum are getting out of control. Every single chance to insult islam is utilized by them well. Personally i think this is a stupid law! For example Khawla Binte Al Azwar, fought on her horse!!

Acehnese women not Indonesian. If most of them never think of themselves as Indonesian in the first place why must they be considered "Indonesian" by you. Take the Catalan for example their motto is "Not Spanish."

BBC News - Indonesia city to ban women 'straddling motorbikes'

A city in the Indonesian province of Aceh which follows Sharia has ordered female passengers not to straddle motorbikes behind male drivers.

Suaidi Yahya, mayor of Lhokseumawe, says it aims to save people's "morals and behaviours".

Leaflets have been sent out to government offices and residents to inform them about the regulation.

Aceh is the only Indonesian province that follows Sharia.

Under the new regulation, the mayor says that women passengers are only allowed to sit "side-saddle" because straddling the bike seat violates Islamic values.

"When you see a woman straddle, she looks like a man. But if she sits side-saddle, she looks like a woman," Suaidi said.

He added that passengers who sat side-saddle rarely fell off.

The local government will be evaluating the regulation in a month, after which it could turn into a by-law, he added.

When asked if women who did not follow the rule would be punished, Suaidi said: "Once it has become a by-law, automatically there will be sanctions."

The regulation has been met with criticism from well-known Muslim activists like Ulil Abshar Abdalla, who is based in the capital, Jakarta.

"How to ride a motorbike is not regulated in Sharia. There is no mention of it in the Koran or Hadiths," he said on his Twitter account, referring to the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.

"In a democratic country, what is claimed to be Sharia must be assessed by the public's common sense if the government aims to turn the regulation into law."
Yes the position seems little awkward but they should introduce more buses only for women and other transport services for women so they can travel easily and maintain their Hijab and dignity

Will horse-riding be banned too? Cycling? Probably anything that necessitates the opening of one's legs in public!!!

Now you are arguing just for the sake of it. As long as the democratically elected Indonesian govt. consider Acehnese women to be Indonesia, as a global citizen we too have to consider them Indonesian.

Under Autonomy law its different. President SBY called Jogjakarta a country within a country where the government have no power over the local government policy. Indonesian flag may flown in Aceh, but the law they have is not an Indonesian law. To call Acehnese an Indonesian is just plain laziness or ignorance over the country complex & diverse society. What the hell is a Global citizen anyway?
