I also think the benefits are skewed more in favor of Japan and the US, but I also respect the problems. However, I question whether China would be better for Indonesia than Japan and the US. China is often seen as the economic engine of the region, and in truth, it is. But China is also very protectionist, even to the point of using its own laborers to build foreign projects and denying foreign competition or regarding them with suspicion back at home. It demands returns and does not apply charity without concession. I respect this... it's a smart business decision. But when a nation demands favors for favors, maybe not economic kickbacks or contracts, perhaps political or military brownie points, does the benefit of a economic development become outweighed by the issues presented? Japan and the US will offer the same formula, perhaps even to the same extent. The US will seeks to develop Indonesia with its own industries, but will use domestic labor instead of its own, but it will seek political and military kickbacks in return for its help. Siding with China presents a lot of economic, but limited military and political benefits. There are downsides too as seen with China's trading partner's trade imbalances and resentment over China's sometimes predatory economic practices. But that doesn't mean that the other option is free from sin either. Either side can offer benefits, keeping a non-aligned course is attractive, but to fully reap the benefits one side must be chosen. The US and Japan are just a more full package.

Indonesia, China sign 12 investment MoUs

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and China have signed 12 memorandums of understanding for cooperation in various economic sectors, Suryo Bambang Sulisto has said.
In a written statement received here on Sunday the general chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said the MOUs were among others signed by PT Zadasa with Shen Zhen Tian He Wei Hang with involving an investment of US$5.510 million, PT Resteel Industry with China Railway Construction, PT Eka Sampoerna Sukses with Fujian Yinhai Group involving an investment of US$1.3 million, Maspion Group with Shining Resources involving a total investment of US$100 million for smelter development.
Other companies signing the MOUs are Global Sukses Group, Cahaya Sukses International with Fujian Tian Mao involving an investment of US$1.5 million, PT Wijaya Infrastruktur Indonesia with Golden Mega Internatinal Holdings involving US$120 million, PT Integral Mining Nusantara with Jiangsu Wei-Wei Mining involving an investment of US$775 million, PT Sinar Sukses Mandiri with Zhong Ji Hao involving an investment of US$360 million.
PT Indonesia Energy Prima signed an MOU with SDIC International Trade involving an investment of US$350 million, PT Kayan Hydro Energy with Shanghai Electric Power involving an investment of up to US$17.8 billion, PT Adaro Power with China Shenhua Overseas and PT MAESA Optimalah Mineral with Vansun Holding Group.
"Indonesia must strive to get a benefit from regional and bilateral partnerships optimally for the welfare of the people, including with China with which Indonesia has had relations for a long time," Suryo said.
He said ASEAN regional cooperation has also continued to develop vertically because of the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community in 2015, and horizontally with other countries.
Kadin, he said, would take efforts and conduct cooperation orientation with other countries especially China which is considered very strategic.
"We welcome Chinas wish to develop 21st Century Silk Road to boost the realization of the vision of Indonesia as a maritime state," he said.
The chairman of Kadin took part in the Indonesia-China Business Forum in Beijing which was opened by President Joko Widodo.
President Joko Widodo is currently in China for a visit until November 11 that includes attending an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) meeting.
After China President Joko Widodo will visit Myanmar for an ASEAN summit and Australia for a G20 summit.
The meetings have been considered very important for the national interest.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the national interests include increasing investment to develop infrastructure in various regions in the country.
Indonesia needs a lot of investment to support various development programs including "toll sea" to realize the maritime axis envisioned by President Joko Widodo.

Beijing (ANTARA News) - Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that Indonesia-China comprehensive strategic partnership is the most dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region.
"The comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China continues to develop and constitutes the most dynamics in the Asia and Pacific region," President Xi Jinping said when holding a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Peoples Great Hall of China here on Sunday.
Xi Jinping said that the relationship between Indonesia and China had been running for a long time. They have a very deep friendship.
"There is an Indonesian saying: out of sight close to the heart. Even though the two countries are separated by the wide sea and ocean, the magnitude of the waves will not hinder our exchange of activities, beginning from the visit of Admiral Chengho (who sailed to Indonesia) to the Asian-African Conference," said President Xi.
He said that the two countries have established a deep friendship and respect each other as common neighbors and old friends.
On the occasion, President Xi congratulated Jokowi who was elected as the seventh President of Indonesia recently for the coming five years.
"I am convinced under the leadership of Jokowi, Indonesia will become more advanced, including in development and in international affairs," the Chinese President said.
In the meantime, President Jokowi said he wanted Indonesia-China comprehensive strategic partnership to be more concrete and implemented for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries.
"Indonesia and China already have relations since in the past hundreds of years. This is an asset for the two countries to build a comprehensive strategic partnership. Ahead, I want this comprehensive strategic partnership to become more concrete," Jokowi.
In the meeting, President Jokowi was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sofyan Djalil, Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto and Regional Representative Council (DPD) Chairman GKR Hemas.
President Jokowi said that if the comprehensive strategic partnership is made more concrete and implemented, it would benefit the two countries, particularly their peoples.
On the occasion President Jokowi also expressed his gratitude for being invited to the 22nd meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit which will be held on November 10-11, 2014.
President Jokowi also invited President Xi Jinping to attend the 60th anniversary of the Afro-Asian Conference in Indonesia.
Indonesia and China established a strategy partnership through an agreement signed by then Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and then Chinese President Hu Jintao on April 25, 2005.
Both countries agreed to raise their strategic partnership agreement to comprehensive partnership agreement when President Xi Jinping visited Indonesia in October 2013.
