Indo-Israeli LRSAM Range Extended By A Third

The Indo-Israeli LRSAM/Barak-8 began its first hot trials with the Israeli Navy in May this year. In what could be the single most significant development in the weapon system's long-drawn journey, the Indian Navy has confirmed to Livefist that the LRSAM will sport an operational range a third higher than initially agreed upon. In effect, the LRSAM's range now moves from 70-km to in excess of 90-km or higher. Range upgrade discussions took place in November last year following .

IAI and India's DRDO missile cluster (led by the DRDL) that have jointly developed the missile system, designated the Barak 8 for Israel and yet to be officially named in India, have begun work on boosting weapon range.

With preliminary integration activity already on, Livefist can also confirm that the LRSAM is all set to undergo its first test firing from Indian Navy destroyer INS Kolkata in November-December this year in the Arabian Sea. The weapon system is intended for a host of frontline surface combatants, including all future fighting ships of the Indian Navy.

Top Navy tell Livefist that while the 2nd Kolkata-class destroyer Kochi set to enter service on September 30, like the first ship of its class, sports a BEL-built HUMSA NG bow mounted sonar, the contracted active towed array sonar will be integrated within the next 16-18 months.

DRDO's Dual Pulse Rocket Motor has been an extremely crucial breakthrough - It is also being used in Astra Mark I & will be used in Astra Mark II BVRAAM and Akash Mark II SAM - The difference between Akash and Akash Mk-2 would be the dropping of Akash-1's ramjet sustainer in favor of this pulsed rocket motor. A pulsed rocket motor has multiple propellant segments, with a barrier that stops ignition separating any two segments. When one segment burns out the missile coasts till another segment is ignited. During end game, a freshly ignited rocket motor segment would make Akash Mk-2 much more lethal than the ramjet of Akash thus increasing the range to 60 km from the present 25 km.

It's possible to use Thrust vectoring nozzle on Astra and LR Sam?

AFAIK both Astra Mark I and LR-SAM feature TVC's - LR-SAM comes with a tungsten jet vane system for thrust vector control developed by DRDL - this jet vane system along with DRDL's electro-pneumatic control actuation system are responsible for LR-SAM's high agility.

In case of Astra Mark I - the thrust-vector control nozzle’s design is not as optimized as those of the Russian/Israeli/Western BVRAAM's - that's the reason Astra requires large mid-body control fins for adequate flight control.

To increase the range they have cut down on the missile's weight and increased its length, though the booster's weight balances it.

Now I am even more confused why would desi lovin navy want maîtri instead of Akash 2:what:

Akash is a beam riding missile, won't be effective to track and follow a target beyond 50 km, and low flying targets. Akash was developed as a point defense SAM and it's bloody good at it. I believe there is another SAM in development with active seeker.

Actually the technologies gained through Maitri SR-SAM will be of immense help in realizing Akash Mk-2 - Active Missile Seekers and Vertical Launch Systems are the two risk areas for which India would like to go with MBDA's offer.

The MBDA pitch might look opportunistic and self-serving at the outset, but if you listen to what MBDA officials have to say, you could well change your mind. MBDA officials categorically confirmed during Aero India 2015 that they will transfer complete seeker technology to DRDO. There was no question of a partial TOT as was the case with Russia and the Astra missile.

MBDA believes that the risks involved in a project to develop a missile from scratch, as DRDO intends to do with Akash 2, are substantial with long and uncertain development time. Seeker and Vertical Launch are risk areas. India would be much better off getting the technology from MBDA so that timelines are not stretched to an extent where the usefulness of the product comes under a cloud. The production facility will be set up in India as well.

I don't see the point of changing the whole propulsion of mk-2. It is a heavy missile designed with soviet era air defence philosophies. if you are changing propulsion,guidance what is left akash in it other than an outdated design.Look at barak 8, at half the size,portability and weight it achieves twice of what akash can achieve in almost every aspects.

Yes, Akash is a success. Do some minor improvements like range and move on.
My bet is on SR-SAM project of DRDO. With seeker tech transfer from MBDA, it is very feasible project with lot of export potential.
