There are allegations by Awami League that the park was first constructed by BNP founder major general Ziaur Rahman on the ground of Pakistan's surrender place and other historical places to erase the memory of 1971 history.
Now the Awami League Govt. has taken a 200 cr project to renovate the park by demolishing the existing structures and will build some child rides and also construct Indira Gandhi statue to show her respect. also the surrender place of Pakistani forces will be preserved as well.The work is already in full swing. Will be inaugurated in 2020.

আওয়ামী লীগ ১৯৯৬ সালে সরকার গঠনের পর স্বাধীনতাসংগ্রাম, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ও সশস্ত্র বিজয়ের গৌরবময় স্মৃতিকে চির অম্লান করে রাখতে সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানে স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভ নির্মাণের পরিকল্পনা নেয়। ২০০১ সালে বিএনপি-জামায়াত সরকার ক্ষমতায় এসে এই প্রকল্পের কাজ বন্ধ করে দিয়েছিল। এরপর আবার আওয়ামী লীগ ক্ষমতায় এসে কাজ শুরু করে এবং ২০১৫ সালে দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ের কাজ সম্পন্ন হয়। নির্মিত হয় শিখা চিরন্তন, গ্লাস টাওয়ার, মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ম্যুরাল, জলাধার, ভূগর্ভে স্বাধীনতা জাদুঘর, মুক্তমঞ্চ।
২০১৪ সালের ২৮ ডিসেম্বর প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা পূর্ত মন্ত্রণালয় পরিদর্শনকালে সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভ প্রকল্পের কাজ সম্পন্ন করতে প্রয়োজনীয় নির্দেশনা দেন। তিনি এই উদ্যানকে ঐতিহাসিক গুরুত্ব অনুসারে সাজানোর এবং দৃষ্টিনন্দন পর্যটন কেন্দ্র হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার ওপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করেন। সে অনুসারে উদ্যান নিয়ে পূর্ণাঙ্গ স্থাপত্য নকশা তৈরির জন্য স্থাপত্য অধিদপ্তরকে দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়।
প্রধানমন্ত্রীর নির্দেশনা অনুসারে উদ্যানের শিশু পার্ককে পুনর্বিন্যস্ত করে উদ্যানের ঐতিহাসিক স্থানগুলোকে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে। সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের পূর্ণাঙ্গ নকশা প্রণয়ন করেছেন স্থাপত্য অধিদপ্তরের স্থপতি আসিফুর রহমান ভূঁইয়া। নকশা অনুসারে ঢাকা ক্লাবের উল্টো দিকে বর্তমান শিশু পার্কের প্রবেশপথই হচ্ছে স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভ প্রকল্পের প্রবেশপথ। ঢুকলেই সরলরেখায় সামনে দেখা যাবে শিখা চিরন্তন ও গ্লাস টাওয়ার। প্রবেশপথের দুই পাশে শিশু পার্কের রাইড স্থাপন করা হবে। ডান পাশে পড়েছে পাকিস্তানিদের আত্মসমর্পণ মঞ্চ, তারপর বাঁ পাশে ৭ই মার্চের ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ মঞ্চ, এর বাঁয়েই ইন্দিরা মঞ্চ। পুলিশ কন্ট্রোল রুম ও পার্কের ভূগর্ভে হচ্ছে পার্কিংয়ের স্থান; যেখানে একসঙ্গে ৫০০ গাড়ি রাখার ব্যবস্থা থাকবে। পুলিশ কন্ট্রোল রুমের পাশের ব্রিটিশ আমলে নির্মিত জিমখানা ও ঘোড়দৌড় দেখার গ্যালারিকে সংস্কার ও নবায়ন করে রক্ষা করা হচ্ছে। একইভাবে এখানে ব্রিটিশ আমলে নির্মিত একটি দোতলা ভবনকেও অবিকলভাবে সংরক্ষণ করা হচ্ছে।
পরিকল্পনা অনুসারে শাহবাগ থানা এখান থেকে চলে যাবে। ফুলের মার্কেটের জন্য নতুন স্থাপনা নির্মাণ করে দেওয়া হবে। প্রকল্পের আওতায় মুসলমান দর্শনার্থীদের সুবিধার্থে নামাজ পড়ার স্থানও রাখা হয়েছে। এতে নারী-পুরুষের জন্য পৃথক ব্যবস্থা থাকবে। শিশুদের দুধপানের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট স্থানও থাকছে। থাকবে ফুডকোর্ট।

স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভের গ্লাস টাওয়ার, ম্যুরাল, শিখা চিরন্তন—এগুলো উদ্যানের যেকোনো জায়গা থেকে যাতে দেখা যায় সেদিকে খেয়াল রেখে নতুন করে বৃক্ষরোপণ করা হবে। বাকি অংশগুলোতে সবুজ বেষ্টনী তৈরি করা হবে।
সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের আগের নাম ছিল রেসকোর্স ময়দান। বাংলাদেশের জন্মের ইতিহাসের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে ময়দানটি। দেশের মোড় পরিবর্তনকারী ঐতিহাসিক অনেক জনসভা ও ঘটনা এখানে সংঘটিত হয়েছে। অভিযোগ রয়েছে, সেই ইতিহাসকে ভুলিয়ে দিতে এখানে জিয়া শিশু পার্ক স্থাপন করা হয়। ২০০৯ সালে হাইকোর্ট এ উদ্যান থেকে স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তীকালে নির্মিত সব স্থাপনা অপসারণের নির্দেশ দেন। শিল্পকলা একাডেমি থেকে শুরু করে জাতীয় জাদুঘর-বাংলা একাডেমি-কেন্দ্রীয় শহীদ মিনারকে কেন্দ্র করে যে সাংস্কৃতিক বলয় গড়ে তোলার পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে, তার কেন্দ্রে আছে এই সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভ।
প্রকল্প পরিচালক মুক্তিযুদ্ধ মন্ত্রণালয়ের যুগ্ম সচিব ড. মইনুল হক আনসারী জানিয়েছেন, স্বাধীনতাস্তম্ভ নির্মাণ প্রকল্পের তৃতীয় পর্যায় আগামী ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে সম্পন্ন করার লক্ষ্যে কাজ এগিয়ে চলেছে।
