Might as well erect one depicting Pakistani phallus, to remind you of Pak not giving a fk.

The stage will be reconstructed with her statue giving speech in Dhaka.

There will be stage where Indira gandhi's statue will be built reprising her giving speech in Dhaka. We always respect Indira Gandhi for her bravery. She is considered Iron Lady before Sheikh Hasina took the title from her. :yahoo:
Do you ppl have roads named after Muhammad Ali Jinnah?

Pulling things out of your arse Indie man? Where is it written in the report?

There was already Indira statue before which was destroyed by Ziaur Rahman during his tenure. Now the same will be reconstructed again. Haven't you read Bangladesh newspapers?

In the times of General Ziaur Rahman, the bad move of building a children's park inside the Udyan sent the knife twisting through our tradition. Once that was done, it was the historic character of the Udyan that was left undermined.

To be sure, a shwadhinota stambha, or independence monument, is there, incomplete because the government that succeeded Sheikh Hasina's in 2001 was too driven by vindictiveness to follow through on the project. There may come a day when the monument finally turns out to be a true, tangible testimony to our liberation as a people. For now, we will pray that no one tampers with the edifice as it exists. But have you noticed that many of us actually face difficulties trying to locate the exact spot from where Bangabandhu gave out his call for freedom? Ask the sceptics. They will tell you that it has been devoured by the Shishu Park. Much a similar opinion is there about the Indira Mancha, built in 1972 to commemorate Indira Gandhi's visit to Bangladesh.

It was renamed as Bangabandhu Avenue. Earlier it was named Jinnah Avenue. Bangladeshis hate Jinnah a lot mainly on language movement issue.

You think Mancha means statue idiot? Again, there is no mention about a statue of Indira Gandhi anywhere.

But on the point - she already has a few roads on her name. Good to see acknowledgment from neighbors. I’d say thank you. But am sure BJP guys might have a problem with this too.
I am a so called BJP guy, and truly it would be unfortunate if BJP guys have a problem with it.
After all she was the PM under whose term Indian Military intervened in the East Pakistan situation and helped it become Bangladesh.

Great great mother of nation should be worshiped
Great idea. It's nice that Banglas's are now acknowledging those who helped to birth their nation. Indira Gandhi was the nurse that helped to deliver the Bangla project.

I also think there should be two more memorials on the park ~

  • memorial one to celebrate death of One Nation Theory
  • memorial two to celebrate death of Two Nation Theory

1971 pretty will debunked the notion of One Nation Theory. That is South Asia or the Raj being one country and Pakistan being a aberration. Bangla did not coalesce into India in 1971 but has continued to exist as a separate nation heading to what appears to be a bright destiny.

1971 also wiped out the notion of Two Nation Theory. That Muslims were one nation. The fact that 160 million Muslim have chose a independant path, separate from Pakistan destroys the idea of 'one religion one nation'. Bangladesh's existence today is living proof of the death of 'Two Nation Theory'.

Thus this even helped to expose the reality that South Asia is many nations [like Europe] federated into states ~ at the moment Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan.

THAT, my friend, is a wet dream. See how difficult it is to take out UK from EU - which is the lightest unions in every sense of the word. To take states out of India or Pakistan and create boatloads of land locked countries with very limited identities, no self reliance mechanisms will not work. The federal system of India has made sure of that very well. The scecessionism in few corners of India is total primarily restricted to Kashmir province and the Naxalism in a very few small pockets in India today the rest are more like local admin issues. Economic success has an amazing power to unite. Plus, the culture of big cities and unbridled immigration to big cities from all over the country make that separation an unviable choice. There will be strong Regional parties, big speeches in corners in halls full of a few thousands and that will be about it.

This one nation theory ended at partition - rightly or wrongly is a debate - but no point having that debate anymore as that is a fact and two nation theory was flawed because like long distance relationships, it needed persistence, nurturing and patience and the folks in west got too comfortable leading and made their eastern part look like a colony. You have only politicians and military leadership to blame for it, to even give this a chance in a new nation. India helped to protect her interest but the opportunity was presented in a platter.

That just made Indira the legend she has become in that part do the world and for many, in India as well.

Bangladesh has been kind enough to acknowledge that openly and I find that impressive and courteous.
