The missile system was guided to high-altitude to simulate aircraft release conditions.

BALASORE:
The second indigenously developed "Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)" propulsion-based missile system was successfully flight tested in Odisha by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Friday.

"The success of SFDR propulsion technology is a significant milestone and will pave the way for development of long-range air-to-air missiles in the country," a Defence statement said.

The ground booster, separation of ground booster and nozzle-less-booster performance were found satisfactory during the trial conducted in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore district, it said.

The missile system was guided to high-altitude to simulate aircraft release conditions and subsequently nozzle-less-booster was ignited.

The SFDR-based missile accelerated to achieve the ramjet Mach number successfully, the statement said.

The trajectory was tracked by telemetry and radar stations till touchdown and all the mission objectives have been met.

COMMENT
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated the DRDO and associated team members for this "stupendous mission".

This is totally a new technology. India has entered into a new phase of very fast and very long range Aor to Air and Surface to air missiles technology.

Akash Mk1, QR sam, Akash MK2 and now Ramjet based SAM will come with a very long range. In A to A mode, It will have ultra long range in league of METEOR. This is a great development. New @$$ kicking technologies are coming to which India's enemy has no counter. Better they stay away.

Still long way for an operational product but India has to make this work because Meteor is no longer an option for LCA or SU-30MKI, it will only equip Rafales. I suspect India will have to enter into a JV with Israel for a Meteor type missile since they have very good advancements in seeker technology.

Meanwhile PL-15 which is China's answer to Meteor is expected on JF-17 block-3 and Project Azm. Block-3 will make it's first flight in Aug 2019, so expect PAF to start inducting/fielding PL-15 equipped jets by mid/late 2021.

In the meantime First Rafale could be as late as 2022 for InAF.

Pl-15 is already confirmed on J-10C and J-31. There is also a PL-21 in progress.

"
PL-15 is inducted into military service in 2016 and is being carried by the J-10C, J-16 and J-20 aircraft.[1] The missile features an active electronically scanned array radar, which makes evasion difficult for the most agile of fighter jets.[2] It is 4 meters long and incorporates a dual-thrust rocket motor. Upon launch, the missile reaches a speed of mach 4 and is capable of engaging targets at a distance of 150 km.

Compared to Chinese previous generation PL-12, which boasts a maximum range of 100 km, the new and larger PL-15 has a longer radar detection range and increased anti-jamming capability. During the 2018 Airshow China, two J-20 fighters of PLAAF displays their internal payload, with each carrying four PL-15 and two PL-10E in its internal weapons bay. PL-15 effectively increases Chinese Anti-Access/Area Denial capability by targeting key "enabler" targets, such as Aerial refueling and AEW&C aircraft.

Military expert Fu Qianshao suggested that China was developing an advanced long-range missile air-to-air missile capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 400 km

Who do you mean when you say "India's enemy". I thought your stand was that India is way ahead and way over Pakistan now and have global ambitions, considering China as India's enemy not Pakistan. :)

Mate this with good seeker, preferably AESA based and you have a damn good A2A missile

Yup, not sure whether the seeker is AESA but an Indian seeker is on the Astra already(Range 75+ Km, Limited production underway)
The existing Russian Agat 9B1103M active radar seeker used on the Astra had been replaced with an Indian Ku-band seeker developed by the DRDO’s Research Center Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad.

it is too long to get fitted on fighterjets

Congratulation. A game Changer Missile/technology.

What this means is that India is on the verge of mastering game-changing missile technology which will enable a jet fighter like the Tejas to launch an air to air missile that will travel at between Mach 3 and Mach 7 towards an enemy fighter likely upwards of 300kms away.

Wrong.

First Rafale will Arrive THIS YEAR in 2019.
You are confused with LAST date with FIRST date. All 36 Rafales will be Delivered by 2022.

Also,

India has ALREADY mated its OWN seeker for Astra.
Yes, India has its Own Seeker for A-to-A Missile Astra :

The existing Russian Agat 9B1103M active radar seeker used on the Astra had been replaced with an Indian Ku-band seeker developed by the DRDO’s Research Center Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad.

Dude, seems your brain was fitted by DRDO.
Everything India makes is indigenous, next generation and has no other parallel and after a single test it becomes the war winner.....didn't you say the same about your Tejas, Arjuns, Sitara and some missiles.
Since you have a habit of boxing above weight, let me tell you a little secret, your much vaunted purchase of S-400, has been compromised even before it's delivered....so better to protect your own a$$ rather than dreaming otherwise.

Are you saying this because inspite of pulling all power from your back, you guys could not get it?

Yes, isn't it next generation? How many countries in world has ramjet powered SAM except METEOR? You guys still takes simple rocket powered BS Chinese missiles while we moved to duel pulse motor in ASTRA and RAMJET in this particular missile technology.
