The Indian Air Force (IAF) will soon fly the first indigenous airborne radar system mounted on the Brazilian Embraer jet for flight trials and induction by April 2014.

“We will start flying the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) soon after its integration for extensive flight trials for induction and operationalisation in April 2014,” Chief of Air Staff N.A.K. Browne told reporters here Thursday.

To strengthen its surveillance network, the IAF has tied up with the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 2007 to induct three indigenously built airborne radar systems atop three modified Embraer jets at a cost of Rs.2,157 crore ($399 million).

The airborne radars are meant to detect aerial threats from enemy fighters to cruise missiles and serve IAF fighters in combat operations with enemy jets and help in tracking troop build-ups on the ground.

Designed and developed by the city-based Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) of DRDO to detect enemy aircraft, battle ships and terrain vehicles at long ranges the airborne radar has an active electronically scanned array (AESA) atop the customised EMG-145 fuselage and about 60 antennae and sensors over the body of the 4.5-tonne aircraft.

“For the first time, the aircraft has air-to-air refueling system to extend its flying hours (time-on-station). The cabin has been reconfigured to have five operator work stations, four equipment racks, additional fuselage fuel tanks and five rest crew seats,” CABS director and AEW&C programme director S. Christopher said on the occasion of handing over the aircraft to IAF.

Noting that the radar system was a complex project, Browne said the programme was part of IAF’s long-term vision to indigenise its operational requirements and a starting point for more complex surveillance platforms.

“We will use the AEW&C system along with the (Israeli-built) Phalcon airborne warning and control system (AWACS) platform with the AESA mounted atop the IL-76 (Russian built Illyushin) to enhance our air warfare,” Browne said.

The IAF has bought three Phalcon AWACS on IL-76 for $1.1 billion under a tripartite agreement with Israel and Russia in 2004.

Terming the reception of the aircraft from Embraer a milestone, DRDO director-general (R&D) V.K. Saraswat said the AEW&C system would put India into the elite group of developing such a complex surveillance platform.

“The world is watching this radar with bated breath as its development will benefit Embraer and DRDO to collaborate for producing a cost-effective and formidable force multipliers in the global market,” Saraswat, who is also scientific adviser Defence Minister A.K. Antony, said on the occasion.

.
Great work. 60 antennaes and sensors on the aircraft!

.
I think..this type of aircraft not suitable for country like India..We need big aircraft like Boeing,Airbus..

.
good, now they must also look for global opportunities after fulfilling IAF requirement, this system can be a competitor to swedish and chinese ones with such wide array of sensors and cost effectiveness.......

.
Great news......everyday something good is happening in all this mess....Mogambo Khush Hua.

theses will operate along with long range Awac's.

The advantage of dome radars over beam radars is not range but degree of coverage and efficiency.

AEW&CS has a range of 400km, Phalcon cannot be much more than that. But nothing to worry
about cuz DRDO is also looking to develop a 360-degree dome radar similar to Phalcon for IAF after
2015. It could be mounted on Boeing E-767.

.
looks good

hope there is no delay in induction

.
We need more phalcons too , these kids are not enough . 2 Phalcons can take care of our western enemy .

.
Any specs like radar range against fighter sized targets, maximum targets tracked and simultaneous fighter direction etc.?

A follow-on order for 2 is on the books to be signed this FY. Delays have been caused by internal discussions within the IAF whether they can afford wasting time to seek out a soutable replacment to the A-50 as the airfram because they REALLY don't like the A-50 wrt its competitors. However I'm sure the deal will be signed soon tha the IAF will have had to bite the bullet and order 2 more A-50s.

Highly classified information, as India has no immediate plans for export the specs will remain classified too for the foreseeable future.

range for a 2m^2 target. From here -

Ofcourse, these detection range figures are of ground-based LSTAR radar (baseline version for AEW&CS), not
the airborne AWACS radar that's more sophisticated and has a higher power output, it's detection ranges are likely
to be higher than that.

The max range of the airborne radar is 400km, other specs are yet unknown.

Soon there'll be ship-based AESA versions as well, this radar has a long way to drive,,,I think accurate
figures of the airborne AESA will be avilable once the trials and testing concludes.

aside from lesser loiter time, these are every bit as good as our phalcons. The lads at drdo have managed to create something quite revolutionary with respect to our indigenous aesa. Better than what the swedes are selling for a comparable price, and what most of europeans would be willing to sell

.
Good news :D more indigenous stuff. But still would have loved more if it would have been a 360० radar
