China was very poor some decades ago, but I don't think China was ever this poor as India today and people have to bring the end to their own lives to escape this life consuming poverty.

In 2008 with a GDP of $3 trillion and population of 1.3 billion, China was as poor as India in 2020.. so unless you are 12 years or younger, you have seen all the same level of poverty...

By the way with a HDI ranking of 85, there are another 84 countries where its citizens are doing better than average Chinese currently. Infact with a per capita GDP of $10000, China is still $4000 short of US benchmark of poverty ($14000 per capita or below).

I didn't see people sleeping on the street and struggling to fill an empty stomach in 2020, China's wealth back then was much more evenly distributed among the population. after 1960's, people in China have never experienced food shortage and starvation like many Indians still face today.

1000 Dollars in China a month can give you a decent life if you spend the money wisely, but in the States you will be struggling to get by, so it doesn't reflect the standard of living at all. Americans may seem to make more money but the money can only make their ends meet, but Chinese can live a comfortable life and still save some money with much less.
