India's Ayni Military base in Tajikistan is Russia-Locked

Do you share a common boundary with Tajikistan ? ... Does Tajikistan has access to sea ? ... Will Pakistan or China ever allow you to station your aircraft in Dushanbe from their territory ? ...

Who is asking them???
China might also be secretly asking Russians to stop Indias from entering Central asia, but Pakistan .

Anyways, this is another diplomatic battle India has to win, by gaining influential and cultural role in tajak. Russians can be brought on line with a few million dollars.

India and Russia would make it happen... Russia understands that India is also a strategic stakeholder in Afghanistan....
A Air base would surely come with blessings of Russia....

Comprehension problems , much ? :azn: Did you read my posts properly ? To access Tajikistan , you need to fly over either Pakistan or China or take a long route via Russia ... Since both Beijing and Islamabad will never allow aircraft to be stationed by crossing their territory , it leaves only Russia !

Savvy ?

Russia anyways does not allow anybody's influence to grow in Central Asia - this has to happen across the table and with Russia's permission - no other way is this possible.

Needs a lot of diplomacy on our part.

Russia and India have found the solution to a series of problems related to cooperation in the war and technology.

A visit to the Ministry of Defence and the intergovernmental discussions of the Committee made it possible to solve a number of problems. In particular, the postponement of the delivery of the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya to Indian counterpart, since during testing detected some problems with the energy system, which requires further work.

During the session, India has raised questions regarding payment by Russia of a monetary penalty for late delivery of the aircraft carrier. Irina Koval'čuk, press secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Russia, said that "The Indian side has asked to conclude in the shortest possible time all the necessary work to the ship and its delivery to the Indian Navy."

New Delhi shares the point of view of Moscow, the "Vikramaditya" has a unique character. As also highlighted Anatoly Serdyukov, Russia has actually built a new aircraft carrier using only the hull of the cruiser and aircraft carrier "Admiral Gorškov." After the meeting of the intergovernmental commission has been known that the carrier will be returned to India in the fourth quarter of 2013.

During the Russian-Indian meetings also discussed the construction of frigates for the Indian Navy, production in India, under license, aircraft Sukhoi SU-30MKI and T-90S tanks and the delivery of helicopters Mi-17V-5 . With regard to the production of BrahMos cruise missiles, Defense Minister of Russia stressed that this program represents an example of joint development of a unique project of its kind in the field of military missiles. According to the estimates of specialists, currently there is nothing in the world comparable to those missiles.

The defense ministers of the two states have dealt with the development of joint projects of a future multi-purpose fighter and a multi-purpose transport aircraft of the fifth generation. The Russian defense minister stressed that "have been resolved a lot of organizational problems. We have agreed on the characteristics of the aircraft and ratified the tactical objectives and technology. We assume that by 2020 could commence series production of this fighter. "

My frnd the planes have to stationed there, they don't have to fly to tajik everyday on top of China and Pakistan :)
We have no problem in taking the long route. Anyways planes bhi toh Russian hi hain, we will tell them to deliver the fighters straight to Tajik airbase then New delhi .

Yeah, MiG 29's were planned to be stationed there. There is a 50:50 chance that this will happen or not, But India's pushing for sure and will come up everytime Russia and India discuss.

What India gains by stationing a few jets in base separated from the mainland by hostile territories?

Its not a one time transport of planes that goes into the maintenance of a military base. We will need continuous replenishment of personal and material and a lot of other things. How will we maintain a logistic trail from Tajik to India during peace time, to say nothing during war time, without Russia's help? Try to draw a continuous line on a world map from India to Tajik, without overflying pak or China. Then you will have an idea of the logistics issue.

Tremendous airpower on the weaker front of at least one of the said hostile neighbors. Jets taking off from ayni AFB can reach Pakistani cities, or target strategic installations, including Islamabad and Rawalpindi in a matter of minutes, flying in from their relatively undefended front. A couple of squadrons of MKIs in Tajik will mean Pakistan having to divert a lot of its prime assets (fighters, SAM systems, radars, people) from its border with India to its northern or western borders. Whatever India spends on a squadron there, pak will have to spend a lot more to counter it.

Agreed, we need to talk to Russia and get them collaborative in this mission.

India is waiting for Russia's go head and looks at Russia's hand before making decisions? India needs some self confidence.

Not on every instance - but Tajikistan is Russia's backyard and Russia's in control there - so obviously we need to talk to them first.
