What's new

India's Asiatic Lion Population Rises by 27% in 5 Years - Tiger Population up by 30% in 3 Years

The answer is in the title of the news article itself.

Gujarat government under CM Modi sat on the Supreme Court's order which supported relocation - in a direct contempt of the court.

Now the Center (which was indifferent at best during UPA1/2) is 'echoing' the same position as that of Gujarat (as per the article) and it doesn't take a genius to figure who might be influencing Center's decision!

In fact, there is not much the 'people' of Gujarat or CM of Gujarat could do if Modi put his foot down and directed the BJP CM to facilitate relocation of the lions for their own good!

The fact that this is coming from Modi is deeply upsetting for many of us who hold Modi above regionalism & petty politics! Especially when he has taken over the mantle of the NATION!

Modi is above regionalism. The fact of matter also is a lot of these other state parks are not secure. The very fact that a lot of these parks could not save the Tigers in their care from poachers and were faking their numbers is a cause for concern. When these parks and states show the same concern for animal protection as Gujarat does, the lions will be moved. It is inevitable given the growing number of lions.

I don't agree that MP (which is where the lions are proposed to be relocated) is totally incapable of protecting the cats. If I am right, MP already has 4-5 very famous tiger reserves and I don't think anybody can pass a judgement about their abilities even before the lions are relocated!

But like I said earlier, more lions (13) died due to floods the last month alone than the numbers proposed for relocation!
Even more number of lions get killed due to overcrowding or crushed by f@cking traffic including trains every year!

Isn't that a pity!?

The numbers proposed to move are over 80 lions. The details for Project Lion along the lines of Project Tiger are being worked out.

That's 80 lions over the course of 15-20 years! They will start with just one pride (one breeding male + a handful of his females and their cubs). We are looking at a number less than 10.

Nowhere in the world, conservationists will take the risk of moving 80 lions or any endangered species all at once.

With Modi as PM, will Centre echo Gujarat opposition to shifting of lions? - The Times of India

From what I read, it appears that Mr. Modi is at it again - cockblocking relocation of a few lions to outside Gujarat.

This is beyond belief that Modi thinks that lions belong only to his native Gujarat! It is even more frustrating that he continues to believe so even as the PM of India!

Somebody should knock some sense into his thick skull before a disaster wipes out the whole species! Otherwise, history would remember him as the man, single-handedly responsible for extermination of Indian lions!

@third eye @Dash

On a more important note, how can we trust this Modi guy to think and act in Indian national interests and beyond those of his native Gujarat, if he can't let go of a few f*cking lions to ensure their long term survival?

More number of lions died in the floods last month than the number required for relocation! How utterly unfortunate!

Why do you want to quote him here. Like third eye said its a matter between states.. It us up to any govt what they want to do with them.

They can go to supreme Court if they wanna contest

Mate, the Supreme Court has already ordered in support of relocation and asked Gujarat government to comply!

In fact, Modi stalled complying with the order even as the CM Gujarat. Now he is alleged to be influencing even the Center's position (as per the link). I don't understand how anybody can justify these stalling tactics by successive Chief Ministers of Gujarat (and by Modi even as PM).

Anyway, we can argue all we want but the only ones to suffer in the end, are the critically endangered species of Asiatic lions!

Ministry of Environment and Forests

Solution to Hardships of Human Beings and Wild Animals
Estimates of population of major wild animals indicate that there has been an increase in number of animals. The number of Asiatic lions has increased from 304 in 1995 to 523 in 2015, Tiger has increased from 1411 in 2006 to 2226 in 2014 and the Elephants from 25569 in 1993 to 29391-30711 in 2012.

Incidences of loss of human lives and damage to crops by wild animals are reported in various parts of the country from time to time. As such data of such incidents are not collated in the Ministry. However, the reports received from the States in National Tiger Conservation Authority and Project Elephant indicate the following data on human death due to Tiger and Elephant.

Year -----------Tiger - Elephant
2012-13 ------22 -371
2013-14 ------24 - 335
2014-15 ----- 26 - 63
Current Year - Not available - Not available
Total --------- 72 - 769

Degradation of the habitat including, depletion of water and food availability is considered some of the reasons for wild animals to come out of its natural habitat.

Wildlife management primarily focuses on improvement of habitats of wild animals by augmenting the availability of food and water in forest areas to reduce the entry of animals from forests to habitations.

The Central Government provides financial assistance to State/Union Territory Governments under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes of 'Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats', 'Project Tiger' and ’Project Elephant', for augmenting their efforts for management of wildlife and their habitats.

The assistance is also provided to the States forpayment of ex-gratia relief, management of wildlife conflict situations and construction/erection of physical barriers, such as barbed wire fence, solar powered electric fence, bio-fencing, boundary walls etc. wherever feasible. In many parts of the country, anti-depredation squads have also been set up to drive away problematic animals.

Keeping in view the losses to crops inflicted by the wild animals, this Ministry, on 24th December, 2014 issued an advisory to the States highlighting the legal provisions under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 to deal with the human-wildlife conflict situations. Vide this advisory, Ministry has also sought proposals from State/Union Territory Governments, after objective assessment of the situation with details of the areas in which notification under section 62 of the Act, declaring any wild animals as vermin for specified period, could be helpful in management of conflict. The same advisory has also been sent to the Chief Minister’s and Environment and Forest Minister’s of all the States/Union Territory Governments and also to all the Council of Minister’s in the Government of India.

Further, Ministry has also issued a detailed advisory on 1st June, 2015 to the State/Union Territory Governments regarding the priority actions for management of human wildlife conflict. The State/UT Governments have been requested to institute a ‘Human Wildlife Management Strategy’ along with other suggested measures for the proper management and prevention of human wildlife conflict situations.

This information was given by Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar, in Rajya Sabha today.

Armed surveillance at Kawal, Amrabad reserves - The Hindu

Updated: September 6, 2015 05:47 IST
The State government is planning to implement a special action plan for protection of wildlife, particularly tigers, in the Kawal and Amrabad tiger reserves, including armed surveillance by the Central forces.

In a review meeting held here on Friday, Minister for Forests Jogu Ramanna stated that the Central forces would reach the field soon.

He noted that the Central government had earmarked special armed force for protection of wildlife.

Rehabilitation plans

As part of the plans to develop eco-tourism in Kawal and Amrabad tiger reserve forests, government had already sanctioned Rs. 400 crore for development of a tourism circuit in Amrabad reserve and efforts were being made to get funds for Kawal forest too.

The State government was preparing rehabilitation plans for Amrabad reserve forest for sending them for Centre’s approval.

Two committees led by the Forests Minister and District Collectors of Adilabad, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda would be formed for preparing rehabilitation plans for the two tiger reserve areas in tune with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the Minister stated.

He directed the Forests and Revenue Departments to conduct a joint survey to fix the boundaries of forest and revenue lands.

As pilot project, such a joint survey would be conducted in one village in every district and joint meetings would also be held to overcome the problems related to Recognition of Forest Rights (RoFR).

Shaurya is all set to begin his journey to Mysuru in the second week of March. Special Arrangement

http://www.thehindu.com/news/nation...suru-zoo-breeding-project/article17368368.ece

Three-year-old Asiatic lion from Gujarat zoo to arrive in Mysuru soon
Shaurya, a three-year-old male Asiatic lion from Rajkot in Gujarat, will soon be making the century-old Mysuru zoo, one of the country’s biggest and famed zoological gardens, its home, and give a greater push to the zoo’s grand plan of breeding the highly endangered species in captivity.

The zoo has set its vision on becoming a successful centre for the captive breeding of Asiatic lions, found only in Gujarat, and share them with other Indian zoos. There are very few Asiatic lions left both in the wild and in captivity since their breeding in captivity was considered to be a huge challenge.

The zoo has got a young lioness, Renita, from Sakkarbaugh zoo in Gujarat. Sakkarbaugh zoo is one of the most sought after zoos across the globe, as it is the largest and most successful breeder of Asiatic lions. Besides exchanging lions across the world, it also releases them into the wild – Gir forest – to increase their numbers.

The Mysuru zoo signed a deal with Rajkot Zoological Park to procure a male lion in return for surplus animals and birds in its stock.

Shaurya is all set to begin his long journey to Mysuru in the second week of March. Mysuru zoo veterinarian Ramesh had gone to Rajkot for screening of the animal before it could be transported it to Mysuru.

With Asiatic lions being in great demand and enjoying a high exchange value, the Mysuru zoo agreed to give quite a lot of animals and birds for the ‘prized’ animal.

“It’s not easy for a zoo to get an Asiatic lion. The young male will be heading to Mysuru soon. Its holding room is being readied. I’m sure Shaurya will be one of the biggest attractions for visitors. The zoo houses only one male lion which is Afro-Asiatic in breed,” zoo executive director K. Kamala told The Hindu. A pair of Indian grey wolf, a male Himalayan black bear, two female hog deer, two male Common Sand Boa, a pair of Alexandrine parakeet, a pair of Lady Amherst pheasant, two pairs of red junglefowl, a pair of white ibis, a pair of rose-ringed parakeet, three pairs of Java Sparrow and ten pairs of budgerigar will be exchanged with Rajkot zoo. Only a few zoos in the country have housed the Asiatic lion.

Mysuru zoo had Asiatic lions in 1989 but could not breed them. Five years ago, it got a pair of lions from Sakkarbaug zoo. The lioness, Gowri, suffered health problems. She delivered a cub that died. Gowri has been taken off display.
