India's Asiatic Lion Population Rises by 27% in 5 Years - Tiger Population up by 30% in 3 Years

Some problem with the link mate.

I could only find the link below which only talks about a proposal to shift Gir lions to Kuno Sanctuary!

Pride of Gujarat gets a new home in Madhya Pradesh as Gir lions move to Kuno sanctuary | Daily Mail Online

Gujarat Government has been sitting on this proposal, even after Supreme court's direction to relocate. From the same link, it also appears, Gujarat government is looking to fight this verdict of the court!

"GUJARAT TO FILE PLEA ON SHIFTING ORDER"

This is exactly what I am talking about. They won't let go of the lions easily, which is tragic!

Its not just about preserving iconic species. That the easy part with artificial insemination and tagging. India needs to preserve large viable tracts of land where the whole biodiversity is preserved, and human encrochment ended with linking corridors for animal and plant species. That is the genuine way for ensuring REAL care.

Asiatic lions missing after floods sighted in Gir forest - The Hindu
The recent flash floods led to the death of ten lions, more than 1,600 blue bulls, and nearly 90 spotted deer among other wild animals.

Nearly 30 Asiatic lions, which were untraceable after last month’s heavy rains that claimed the lives of 10 felines, have been sighted in Gir forest area of Gujarat’s Amreli district.

“These lions were missing after the torrential rains on June 22 that killed at least 10 of them. They were recently sighted on the hills of Bhavadi and Hogoliya and surrounding area of Shetrunji river in Gir forest under Amreli district. Three missing lions were traced this morning,” Deputy Conservator of Forest M.R. Gurjar told PTI.

About 40 lions were living near the banks of Shetrunji river in Liliya-Krakach area. “Since the water level in Shetrunji river near Liliya-Krakach was high on June 22, the lions might have migrated to nearby villages,” he said.

The recent flash floods, which wreaked havoc in some parts of Gujarat, led to the death of ten lions, more than 1,600 blue bulls, and nearly 90 spotted deer among other wild animals.

“The Gir National Park has lot of elevations and hills where the lions retreat when there is flood. Now we will be taking help of around 200 local people to drive away lions to hilly areas in case of warning of heavy rains, as a precautionary measure,” he said.

Damn, sad that floods killed lions, some of the most majestic creatures on this earth.

Thank you India and Indians. If ever there was a country and a population living in harmony with it's surroundings and even animal habitat, it's India. You're a special people. I might sound melodramatic, but I LOVE animals, especially wild animals, and can watch natgeo for hours on end. It breaks my heart to see poaching, and natural habitats being destroyed. So good for you India, thanks for this gift for the world. Keep fighting the good fight.

With Modi as PM, will Centre echo Gujarat opposition to shifting of lions? - The Times of India

From what I read, it appears that Mr. Modi is at it again - cockblocking relocation of a few lions to outside Gujarat.

This is beyond belief that Modi thinks that lions belong only to his native Gujarat! It is even more frustrating that he continues to believe so even as the PM of India!

Somebody should knock some sense into his thick skull before a disaster wipes out the whole species! Otherwise, history would remember him as the man, single-handedly responsible for extermination of Indian lions!

@third eye @Dash

On a more important note, how can we trust this Modi guy to think and act in Indian national interests and beyond those of his native Gujarat, if he can't let go of a few f*cking lions to ensure their long term survival?

More number of lions died in the floods last month than the number required for relocation! How utterly unfortunate!

Why is everything being out on Modi's doorstep ?

From what I read in the article, its a state thing & thats how people of the state feel.

Must change though.

The answer is in the title of the news article itself.

Gujarat government under CM Modi sat on the Supreme Court's order which supported relocation - in a direct contempt of the court.

Now the Center (which was indifferent at best during UPA1/2) is 'echoing' the same position as that of Gujarat (as per the article) and it doesn't take a genius to figure who might be influencing Center's decision!

In fact, there is not much the 'people' of Gujarat or CM of Gujarat could do if Modi put his foot down and directed the BJP CM to facilitate relocation of the lions for their own good!

The fact that this is coming from Modi is deeply upsetting for many of us who hold Modi above regionalism & petty politics! Especially when he has taken over the mantle of the NATION!
