India's 1st Kolkata class DDG

India is blaming Russia for the skyrocketing cost of its warship building program because of steel. India maybe able to make its own marine steel today but the Kolkata class was started almost 10 years ago.

Govt blames Russia for increase in Navy destroyer cost

Inflation has hit the navy hard, and the government says the Russians are partly to blame. The cost of building next generation naval warships at local shipyards has skyrocketed.

The three Kolkata-class destroyers under project 15 A were estimated to cost Rs.16,000 crore, but has gone up by 225 per cent.

Another flagship programme to construct state-of-the-art stealth frigates, known as Project 17, has overshot its estimate of Rs.8,000 crore by 260 per cent.

Similarly, Kamorta-class corvettes under project 28, estimated to cost Rs.8,000, will now be 157 per cent dearer. The blame for the escalation in the cost of the Kolkata-class destroyers has been put on delay in the supply of warship building quality steel by Russia.

The subsequent finalisation of the cost of weapon and sensors to be put on the warships added to the final price tag. The government has presented a detailed response in Parliament on the cost escalation that is bleeding the exchequer.

The cost of the Shivalik-class stealth frigate, the most modern ship to be produced in India till date, has also gone up because of the delay in getting steel from Russia. The problem was further compounded by the fact that its propulsion equipment was not finalised in time as India was for the first time using a combination of diesel and gas arrangements.

The corvette project was delayed because the navy had initially planned to use high tensile strength steel but its import was found to be expensive. Later on, locally developed steel was used.

Even in this case, the suitable propulsion system was not finalised because of the stealth features of the ship.

All the three projects are crucial to the navy's fleet planning. They are the most modern ships to be produced in the country. While one of the three Shivalikclass ships has been commissioned, defence minister A. K. Antony will induct the second one - INS Satpura - later this month in Mumbai.

This is the first time India has ventured into developing stealth warships in local shipyards. These are equipped with an array of weapons and sensors matching requirements of modern war fighting capabilities.

China would not need more than 30 destroyers by 2030 anyway.

I think there will be between 5-6 aircraft carriers by then. Each carrier battle group may have 2-3 destroyers and 2 frigates providing escort.

US needs a lot of destroyers as they have 11 carrier battle groups and need enough for those and other additional tasks around the world.

One thing i don't understand why are u only taking into account us destroyers. Each carrier battle group has a nuclear powered cruiser and a nuclear submarine[sometimes 2 nuke subs].
They have no equivalent against their cruiser[total 22]

people often forget about China's Deence budget when they compare defence development with India.... But then again logic i too greater of a demand on these type of threads..

Its perfectly logical. So when India get into a war with China, be sure to tell them that they can only use the cost of weapons that equal India's defense budget. Using more would be illogical.

ESL classes weren't fair I guess, but still your lack of comprehension or incoherence is understandably...

The contention was aimed at development rate, and not conflict, which in any case for india stands by deterrence capability and not matching China quantitatively.

But then when you are in trolling mode, logic evaporates pretty soon.... right?

So back peddling now? India should focus on the welfare of its citizens instead of making weapons. If it has good relationship with its neighbors, then it won't need all these weapons.

Totally your fault. Chances of pigs flying are higher than the said poster having a logical reasoning ability.

Can any Indian confirm this assertion?

You are correct about USN is more advanced than Chinese navy. And India can ask America to protect India.
Can we seriously have a debate about your US backing India????.. Please

By 30 destroyers, what I meant was 30 destroyers/cruisers combined.

The upcoming Type-55 is a cruiser.

Really stupid reply, from @HariPrasad. Does the Brahmos as ur Almighty God destroy anything ? Brahmos is no wings Mig21, high heat source, limited guidance range, no change track at the end flight.
BTW not only India own super-sonic missile like Brahmos, U.S/Russia/China all equip their own super-sonic cruise missile & anti-ship missile, China own YJ-xxx super-sonic missile family. So Brahmos seriously not threat for us.

Your Junk weapons are good in Papers like J 15 and J 31. No match to Brahmos so far as quality is concern.
